Transportation Photographs: Trucks, Cars, Airplanes, Trains, Boats & Horsedrawn

The photographs of Sterling trucks shown on this page were used as pages in a 1920's Sterling Motors Corporation promotional catalogue used to show specific examples of trucks that they had made. The catalogue was used in the company's offices and showrooms to show potential clients examples of their products. The photographs are black and white photographs, not halftones.

Many of the small black and white airplane photos listed in the Airplane category below are from a collection that was formed in period by an airplane enthusiast. Many of the photos in his collection were taken by photographers known to specialize in airplane photography in the period. Some have assorted and numerous markings of identification.

RPPC Early Full Sized Car and Toy Car Side by Side

RPPC Early Full Sized Car and Toy Car Side by Side

Early twentieth century black and white postally unused postcard that shows a full size early car and a similar looking toy car that is placed amusingly next to the big car so that they are a study in contrast in size. Some of the people in the car look down over the passenger side doors at the little toy car. The tin toy car in the image is a German litho tin windup limousine with a chauffeur driver. We're not certain of the maker but it could possibly have been made by Bing. An enlargement of the detail with the toy car is shown below.

The postcard has a divided back with the CyKo corner stamp box from the 1904 to 1920's period. The postcard shows shadows on the back from having been in an album page. The postcard measures 5 1/2" by 3 1/2". The postcard is in Mint condition.

This first photo to be described shows a biplane. On the back of the photo is written in ink, “My model P-12-C”. On the side of the plane is the number “13”. Printed on the back of the photo is the name “Norman R. Benner”. We had had another photo that we sold earlier of an airplane that was marked on the back, “Norman R. Benner, 3010 North 2nd Street, Philadelphia.” We believe that Norman Benner was the name of the photographer. The photo is in excellent condition. The photo measures 2 1/4” by 3 1/2”.

The second photo shows five airplanes in flight. On the back of the photo is typed, “8 Hendon Air Display Bristol Bulldogs doing their ‘stuff’ England”. Printed on the back is the name, “H. A. Probin” and the number “28 65”. Impressions from the typing on the back show through a bit on the front. The photo is in excellent condition. The photo measures 2 1/4” by 3 5/16”.

The third photo shows a lineup of four biplanes. On the back there is writing in ink which, as best as I can make out, is, “‘B’ Flight. No 70 (BT) Squadron. R. A. F. RPPC Biplane Flying Over Landscape, Found in York, PA

RPPC Biplane Flying Over Landscape, Found in York, PA

Early twentieth century real photo postcard showing a man flying a biplane over buildings, churches, and residences. We don't know if this photo was created from two images, combining a photo of the landscape with that of the plane, or if it was actually a photo of a man flying the plane. Chances are that it was made from two photos as it was unlikely that they had another plane or vantage point to take a photo of a plane flying that high.

This postcard was found in York, PA with several other views of a biplane that performed at the York Fairgrounds but we don't know if this is the same biplane that was in the other views. The photograph is printed upsidedown relative to the address side. The address side has a divided back with a stamp box that has a CyKo stamp box that is from the 1904 to 1920's period. The postcard has a 7/8" long diagonal corner crease. The number "503" is in penciled script on the address side. There is some very very light soiling. The postcard measures 5 1/2" by 3 1/2".

Cabinet Card Photo Hook Pike's Peak Railroad (vs Mule)

Cabinet Card Photo Hook Pike's Peak Railroad (vs Mule)

Late nineteenth century boudoir sized cabinet card photograph showing a locomotive and passenger car of the Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway and also a donkey or mule loaded up with gear on its back. The mule symbolizes the earlier means of traveling up Pike's Peak which would have been a long and arduous journey by mule as experienced by Zalmon Simmons, inventor and founder of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company.

On his first trip to Pike's Peak in the late 1880's Simmons traveled there by mule, an experience which was the inspiration for his providing funding for the development of the Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway Company and the construction of the cog railway. In the cabinet photo the words "The old way" are printed in the negative under the mule and the words "And the new" are printed under the locomotive. Printed in smaller letters in the negative also just above the load on the back of the mule are "I helped to build Pike's Peak Railroad." Printed in the negative at the lower right are: "Summit Pike's Peak, 14,147 Feet" and at the lower left "Hook Photo". Imprinted in the margin to the left of the image is, "The W. E. Hook Wholesale View Co., Colorado, Springs, Colo" which refers to the photographer William Edward Hook (1833 to 1908) who photographed Native Americans, views at Yellowstone, railroads, mining, Colorado Springs, and Colorado scenery.

The cabinet card measures 8" by 5". The card is a bit curved. There is some browning to the margins of the mount and only very minor wear to the corners and edges. The back is blank.

Cabinet Card Photo possibly Railroad Train for Mining

Cabinet Card Photo possibly Railroad Train for Mining

A cabinet card photo that shows nine men and a boy standing on and in front of an odd looking railroad train engine. One of the men holds a tin lunch bucket. The cabinet card measures 6 1/2" by 4 1/4". The back of the cabinet card is blank. Two corners are creased, the mat shows some browning, and the image seems a little faded or lighter in about the upper quarter. A chain link coupler can be seen between the engine car and the next car. We believe that this type of train engine was used in mining operations and that these men are mostly miners but we are not absolutely sure.

Reading, PA Cabinet Card Photo of Train Car Accident

Reading, PA Cabinet Card Photo of Train Car AccidentBack of cabinet card photo of train accident.Late nineteenth century cabinet card photograph showing the aftermath of a horrific train wreck on the Reading railroad at Shoemakersville, Pa.

On September 19, 1890. There was a collision of a freight train and a coal train. The collision of the two trains was followed by a third collision when the Philadelphia and Reading express train with 135 to 150 passengers on board crashed into the train cars on the tracks.

Some of the cars from the passenger train went down the embankment into the Schuylkill river below. There are differing accounts of the number of people killed.

The photo shows a scene with a passenger train car and a locomotive on the tracks while lower down on the side of a hill sloping to the water is the wreckage of at least one, maybe two, train cars and some track. A crowd of people stand in front of and to the left of the passenger car.

Printed to the right of the image is, "Jos. Fritz, 418 N. 6th St., Reading, PA." There is some light wear to the edges and corners of the card and a 5/8" long diagonal crease at the upper left corner. On the back is printed, "Fritz, 418 N. 6th St., Reading, PA. Additional copies of this Cabinet can be had at any time at reduced rates." The cabinet card measures 6 1/2" by 4 1/4". The story of this 1890 train wreck is online on Gendisasters.

There is another account online of the disaster on The Republican Herald newspaper's site from their coverage of the event in 1890 (scroll down in the page to find the story).

CDV Photo Saratoga Springs Circular Railway 1860's #A

CDV Photo Saratoga Springs Circular Railway 1860's #A

Carte de visite photograph circa 1860's that shows a view of railroad track and a building at the Circular Railway in Saratoga Springs, New York. On a sign on the building are the words: “Circular Rail Way.” The Circular Railway was a way for people to entertain themselves while visiting Saratoga Springs. Three people can be seen and there is some sort of cart with large wheels. We have provided an enlargement of that area of the image.

From a publication of the period, Saratoga Illustrated, the Circular Railway is described as “a small piece of track built in a circle, and provided with small cars. Here one may have the infantile joy of a ride in an enlarged baby-carriage - round and round - if you like that kind of manual labor. Some think it a trifle tiresome, . . . “

From Saratoga and How to See It, by R. F. Dearborn, 1872, regarding the Circular Railway: “An opportunity is here afforded for enthusiasts and very gallant gentlemen to test their strength and patience, by propelling themselves and friends round the circle in one of the cars. The recreation requires the expenditure of no little strength, and is only accomplished by the sweat of some one's brow, but it is preferable, doubtless, to ‘swinging round the circle.’”

The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 1/2". Printed on the back is: “W. H. Sipperly, Photographer, Schuylerville, and Mechanicville, Saratoga County, N.Y.” The condition is excellent with only a tiny pinprick in the mat on the right margin, very minor light soil in the margins, and a slight smudge on the back. This cdv was in an album that was unusual in that it had mainly interesting and unusual cdv landscape view images from the Saratoga Springs, New York and the Niagara Falls area.

Great Train Wreck Boudoir Cabinet Photo by Hauseknecht

Great Train Wreck Boudoir Cabinet Photo by Hauseknecht

Original boudoir cabinet photo showing a train wreck with one engine on top of another engine. This is quite a visually powerful & dramatic photo. The wreck apparently took place in the winter as there is snow on and around the train engines. The engine on the bottom has a number 470 at the front center. This is a large boudoir cabinet photo that measures 7 1/2" by 5 1/2". This photo is circa 1880's-1890's.

The back has a marking of the photographer which reads "P. B. Hauseknecht, Leading Photographer of Batavia, N. Y. 106 Main St., Opp. Opera House." We believe that the photographer's name was spelled Hauseknecht. But, we are not certain.

At the top back left corner there is a marking that seems to read as "Wreck on East Peanut is a Hausenecht original". The one word we are not certain of appears to be "Peanut" or possibly "Planut" or "Peannt" or? There are also markings & notes on the back in reference to this photo being "From the Collection of Howard A. Craig Alexander, N. Y. There is also rubber stamped marking of "H. A. David Tyler Boston Train Wreck Imperial Cabinet Photo

David Tyler Boston Train Wreck Imperial Cabinet Photo

Original imperial cabinet photo showing a train wreck involving the David Tyler train engine of Boston & Providence. This is quite a visually powerful & dramatic photo. A group of people observe the wreckage as one man stands up on a demolished boxcar. The engine on the right has the wording "David Tyler" on the cab area.

The engine appears to have collided with another train which has cars numbered 1109 & 1075. This is a large & impressive size imperial cabinet photo that measures 8 7/16" by 5 3/16". This photo is circa 1880's-1890's.

The back has a marking written on "David Tyler Boston & Providence". This appears to have been written on the back in more modern times with a ball point pen.

The front has minor brown toning from age. The back of the mat shows browning & some small brown stains that appear to have been caused by this once being in a frame backed by wood. There is a little paper loss at the top right back corner. The contrast is good in some areas & soft in other areas. The condition is shown in the pics.

Cabinet Photo of Ships, Dock, & Wagons, possibly Brazil

Cabinet Photo of Ships, Dock, & Wagons, possibly Brazil

This professionally taken cabinet photo shows a bustling scene at the dock. Numerous wagons & carts, some ox drawn & some horsedrawn, are arriving & departing & unloading their cargoes at the docks. The docks are jammed up with cargo ready to be loaded onto the ships. Numerous ships & boats are out in the harbor. One of the ships in the harbor is a paddle side wheeler. There are many black people in the image.

The circa 1880's-1890's cabinet photo appears to have been taken in South America. We are not able to pin down a specific country, at this time. But, we think that this may possibly have been taken in Brazil. There is one wrinkle at the top left corner of the mount. The size is 6 1/2" long by 4 1/4" wide.

The condition of the photo can be seen in the pics.

RPPC Carriages at Horse Shoeing & Repair Business circa 1911

RPPC Carriages at Horse Shoeing & Repair Business circa 1911

This is a postally unused divided back real photo postcard showing three horses and two carriages pulled up in front of a Horse Shoeing and Repair business circa 1911, dated by the style of the AZO stamp box which has three triangles pointed up and one triangle pointed down. Other signs can be seen in the image including one with the word "Creamery" on the building on the right. What can be read of that sign is: "rseheads Creamery Store House." Perhaps the "rse" is part of the name "Horseheads"? For Horseheads Creamery? A sign over the top of the building on the left reads either "A. J. Band" or "A. J. Bard." The condition of the postcard can be seen in the accompanying photo. There is a 1 1/2" long diagonal crease that can be seen in the photo just to the left of center in the upper part of the postcard. There is some light soiling and stains on the address side of the postcard. The postcard measures 3 7/16" by 5 7/16".
