Real Photo Postcards

Postcards with black and white photographic images were popular beginning in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. They were collected as souvenirs of places and as friendly communications between friends and relatives. Many postcards were made just to be sent to relatives and friends. Quick portraits were popular. Some were more involved showing a vignette of a holiday scene with children at the Christmas tree and with a new present. Also popular were scenes from places that people were visiting. Dating of the postcards can be done from the style of the address side of the card and from the style of the stamp box. Playles.com has an excellent guide to identifying and dating vintage Real Photo Postcards from the design of the stamp boxes on the card. Click here for our Links page which has the Playle's link and many other helpful reference links on antique and vintage photography.

Occasional fakes of highly collectible subjects turn up and can be spotted by a close examination of the address side of the card where dust shadows have been printed rather than acquired from age. Or by examining the card to see if an old address back has been glued to a front that simulates a genuinely old card.

RPPC Biplane Flying Over Landscape, Found in York, PA

RPPC Biplane Flying Over Landscape, Found in York, PA

Early twentieth century real photo postcard showing a man flying a biplane over buildings, churches, and residences. We don't know if this photo was created from two images, combining a photo of the landscape with that of the plane, or if it was actually a photo of a man flying the plane. Chances are that it was made from two photos as it was unlikely that they had another plane or vantage point to take a photo of a plane flying that high.

This postcard was found in York, PA with several other views of a biplane that performed at the York Fairgrounds but we don't know if this is the same biplane that was in the other views. The photograph is printed upsidedown relative to the address side. The address side has a divided back with a stamp box that has a CyKo stamp box that is from the 1904 to 1920's period. The postcard has a 7/8" long diagonal corner crease. The number "503" is in penciled script on the address side. There is some very very light soiling. The postcard measures 5 1/2" by 3 1/2".

One back of postcard with man with peg leg

The cards measure 5 1/2" tall by 3 1/2" wide. All of the post cards have a divided back & a CKO stamp box. We have just shown one back as a sample since all of the backs are the same variety & all of the backs are in the same condition.

The cards are all in crisp, fresh, near mint condition. The precise condition is shown in the pics.
