CDV Photo General Fieldmarshall Moltke German Spiked Helmet

CDV Photo General Fieldmarshall Moltke German Spiked Helmet

Original old 19th century sepia tone albumen cdv photo of German General Field Marshall & Chief Of Staff of the Prussian Army Helmuth Karl Bernhard Graf Von Moltke He is certainly a dignified looking German military officer! He wears a fantastic spiked helmet & an iron cross. This Moltke was born in 1800 & died in 1891. This Moltke is often called "Moltke The Elder" so as to distinguish him from his relative who fought in WW1. The photo was taken by Loescher & Petsch of 132 Leipzigerstrasse Mittel-Portal, Berlin. This dramatic photo is in near mint condition. The photo with mount measures 4" long by 2 7/16" wide.

CDV Photo Comte Octava Tasca Medals, Inscription Havana

CDV Photo Comte Octava Tasca Medals, Inscription Havana

Nineteenth century CDV photograph of a man wearing many medals. An inked inscription is below his image and reads, as best as I can make out, "Monsieur le Comte Octava Tasca." There is a lengthy inked inscription in the same hand on the back of the CDV which appears to be a thank you and expression of gratitude to a friend. The inscription includes a signature. I can make out the name "Tasca" but not the first name which looks something like "Maironi". Below the signature appears to be "Havana le 2", then another word that I can't make out and then the year "1864." The front shows a bit of browning and edge wear in the margins but otherwise it is in excellent condition. There are a two small flaws at the left outside edge of the image into the margin that look to be due to a slight miscut and the residue of a bit of brown glue as made. The CDV measures 4 1/8" by 2 3/8".

CDV Photo of Soldier with Gun, Sword, Dagger & Feathered Hat

CDV Photo of Soldier with Gun, Sword, Dagger & Feathered Hat

A wonderful & unusual cdv photo of a soldier with gun, sword, dagger, feathered hat, & a dog. He holds a drawn sword of the type which appears to be a model of 1850 officer's sword. The sword has a scabbard with leather fittings & is of a type that would usually be associated with use by a lieutenant or a captain during the Civil War.

He wears a knife on his belt which also has a leather mounted scabbard. He holds in one hand what appears to be a model of 1860 Colt Army revolver. He wears a fascinating hat with several feathers on the rim. The man is wearing checkered pants. He wears a shirt that is more like a fireman's shirt or a naval shirt than the shirt of a soldier. On the left at his feet is a dog.

The photo is marked on the back "Rathsville Photograph Gallery James A. Heitler Proprietor Rathsville, Lancaster, Co., Pa." However, there is/was no Rathsville, Pa. The printer of the back of the card has made a spelling error as the photographer James A. Heitler worked in Rothsville (not Rathsville).

The back is signed at the bottom in pencil "Samuel Ruth". So, apparently, this photo is of Samuel Ruth. There was a Samuel Ruth that served in the 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The following units are all infantry & are additional possibilities, except for the 14th Pa., which is cavalry. In parenthesis I'm listing the town where the unit was raised. Infantry units are: 2nd (3 months) (Harrisburg) - 19th (3 months) (Philadelphia) - 62nd (Pittsburg) - 67th (Philadelphia) - 87th (Yorktown) (York) - 79th (Lancaster) - 107th (Harrisburg) - 153rd (Easton) - 167th (Reading) - 213th (Philadelphia) - 33rd (Emergency unit raised during the Gettysburg campaign) (Harrisburg) - and the 14th Cavalry (Pittsburg).

But, we do not know if the Samuel Ruth in our photo is any one of the Samuel Ruth that served in any of these units? From the style of the mount of this cdv with slightly rounded corners, as made, would date circa late 1860's to early 1870's.

Possibly this man served in the Civil War & still retained his sword, gun, & dagger from the war. Then a few years after the war decided to have his picture taken with some of his items that he still had from the war. Maybe he was serving in the fire department & put on his fireman's shirt for the photo? Possibly this man was not in the army at the point that this photo was taken? Perhaps he was a different Samuel Ruth from all of the possibilities mentioned above. We really do not know. In any event, this is a very fascinating, entertaining, & unusual cdv photo which would probably benefit from some more research. There is very slight wear at the left edge & the tips of the corners. Otherwise, the precise excellent condition is visible in the pictures. The cdv is 4 3/16" long by 2 1/2" wide.

CDV Photo of Nine Suits of Armor with Battle Helmets & Swords

Original cdv photo circa late 1860's- mid-1870's of nine suits of armor inside a castle. The photo shows nine suits of armor including two rare suits of kids armor. Also shown are many early swords & battle helmets hanging on the wall.

The photographer's marking on the back is "G. Jagemann Grofsher Sachsifcher Hof Photograph Eisenach Goldschmiedenstr. B111." This photo is probably from Germany. But, we are not certain. The cdv measures 3 15/16" by 2 7/16". The photo has soft to medium tones. The photo is in excellent condition. The precise condition is shown in the pics.

1870's CDV Photo Soldier with Bayonet, Neu-Ulm, Germany Back of CDV photo of Soldier with Bayonet

Original cdv photo circa 1870's showing a handsome young soldier with his hand on a long bayonet. The photographer's marking is on both the front & the back. The photo was taken by B. Urban of Neu-Ulm in Bavaria, Germany.

The mat has tinest bit of wear at the, as made, rounded corners. There is an extremely thin line of wear scuff at the lower right area of the background. Otherwise, the photo is in excellent condition. The cdv measures 4 3/32" by 2 17/32". The precise condition is shown in the pics.

CDV Photo of Famous Actor Joseph Jefferson by Sarony, NY

CDV Photo of Famous Actor Joseph Jefferson by Sarony, NY

Circa 1869-1870's cdv photo measures 4 3/16" by 2 1/2". The photo shows the famous actor Joseph Jefferson. At the bottom of the photo in the negative is the following wording "Act of Cong. A.D. 1869 by Sarony & Co. in the Clerk's off. of the Dist.s for the S. Dist. of N. Y." The photographer's mark is at the front bottom "Sarony & Co., 680 Broadway, (New York)." Also in the negative is the "Sarony" signature over Jefferson's left leg.

There is minute insignificant trim which was performed, in period, to the four corners to expedite album insertion. This is very slight & quite subtle as the card was issued with rounded corners. There is a small stain at the bottom left corner. Otherwise the photo is in excellent condition. The precise condition is evident in the photos.

CDV Photo Blackface Minstrel Billy Richardson, Signed

CDV Photo Blackface Minstrel Billy Richardson, SignedNineteenth century carte de visite photograph that shows a blackface minstrel with hair standing on end as he poses with a closed umbrella in one raised hand while leaning with his other hand on a book on a table. He has a severe look on his face. He has an oversized white collar, a long coat, plaid pants that are rolled up at the bottom into big cuffs. Around his head in the image is the name, "Billy Richardson". Below his feet in the image are the words, "Stump Oration."

Printed below the image is, "Wilkinson & Co., Photo Artists." On the back is printed, "Mill Lane, Burnley, Holy Croft, Keighley, Blackburn Road, Church, Leonard's Place, Bingley, Padiham. Wilkinson & Co. Photo Artists, (a name obscured by overwriting), Lancashire. Claremont Terrace, Nelson, The Market, Todmorden, New Market Street, Blackburn, and Great Harwood." The cdv is signed in ink on the back: "With best respects, Billy Richardson," with inked initials in the center back plus "to F. Buckley" at the bottom of the back.

The cdv measures 4" by 2 7/16". There is soiling to front and back and also some brown staining on the back.

Billy Richardson was a star stump orator or stump speaker in Sam Hague's Slave Troupe which was also known as Sam Hague's Georgia Minstrels Slave Troupe, Sam Hague's Georgia Slave Minstrels, and Sam Hague's Slave Troupe Minstrels. Richardson was also an end man or corner man in the troupe. Active in minstrel from the 1860's to the 1880's, the troupe owner Sam Hague was a British blackface minstrel clog dancer, the first white owner of a minstrel troupe composed of black members. Billy Richardson made his first New York appearance on January 2, 1882. In the following year he was with Haverly's Minstrels.

According to "The ghost walks,: a chronological history of Blacks in show business, 1865-1910", Richardson was one of four blacks in Hague's troupe when Hague reorganized it as an integrated company in 1870 in Liverpool, England at the St. James Theatre. In the cdv Billy Richardson is shown in blackface and his hand looks very light-skinned. It may be that he was a very lightskinned black man, assuming that the information from "The ghost walks . . . " is correct.

2 Civil War CDV Photos of Col. Goshan, Giant, 7' 11" at 475 & 560 lbs

2 Civil War CDV Photos of Col. Goshan, Giant

A marvelous set of two different circa 1862-1865 cdv signed & inscribed photos of Colonel Ruth Goshan the famous giant. Both photos show Goshan wearing an elaborate uniform with medals, sword, & fancy feathered helmet. On the back of each photo is an in period penciled inscription, apparently in the hand of Goshan. One which reads "Col R Goshan Age 28 W 475 H 7-11". The other photo has a similiar penciled inscription. The first line of the inscription on the back of the second cdv is hard to read. The other lines read "Col. R. Goshan Age 31 W 560 H 7-11". So, in the three years from when he was 28 to 31 he added on a total of an amazing 85 pounds.

Please note that in doing research of these cdvs we found that the photos of this gentleman which are in collections have been found with his name spelled several different ways. We have found his name printed on photos (not in his hand) as Colonel Routh (& also R. or Ruth) Goshen. Also we have found his last name spelled as Goshan, Goshen, & also Goshon.

As we found these two cdv's many years & almost 1,000 miles apart it is quite likely that Goshan signed them both since the inscriptions appear to be in the very same hand. Also, the spelling of his last name as Goshan on both of the cdvs would verify that Goshan was the correct spelling for his last name.

The back of the cdv which shows him at 28 years old has the printed marking of the photographer "R. A. Lord 164 Chatham Street (158 old number,) New-York." The mat measures 3 15/16" by 2 3/8". The other cdv showing him at 31 years old has a marking of the same photographer without the "(158 old number)". In this cdv he is shown with his jacket open & obviously weighing much more.

Back of CDV photos of Colonel Goshan

The cards have some age soiling & wear around the edges & there is some wear to the corners. The top two corners of the card showing him at 28 years old have small creases. The top left corner of the same card has a couple of tiny chips & the back top left corner is a bit bumped. There are three minute pinpoint surface penetrations at the top border. But, these do not go through the card.

There are two minute pinpoint surface penetrations on the left leg of his pants. But, these do not go through the card. There is a light surface wrinkle from left to right across the back of the card located 13/16" up from the bottom border. This wrinkle does not go into the front of the card. The card showing him at 31 years old is as shown requiring no additional details of description.

CDV Photo House with Hayes Presidential Campaign Sign on Pole

CDV Photo House with Hayes Presidential Campaign Sign on Pole

Rare 1876 carte de visite photograph of a snowy scene with a house and a pole on which is hung a political Presidential campaign sign. On the campaign sign is printed, "For President, R. B. Hayes, For Vice President, W. A. Wheeler". The image of the sign itself is tiny as it is a small sign on a pole which is part of a larger scene. The sign is about 1/4" square in the image.

Two men can be seen on the porch of the house. Part of a large building can be seen behind the house. The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 1/2". On the back is printed: "Agt. for Pianos, Cabinet Organs and Sewing Machines. Merchant Tailor and Dealer in Clothing. Gents Furnishing Goods, Hats & Caps, Boots & Shoes. Also Dealer in Segars. James A. Heitler, Rothville, Lan. Co. Pa." Penciled on the back in script is "Swan Hotel".

There is a bit of minor soiling but overall the cdv is in excellent condition. The presidential campaign of 1877 was the most heavily contested of all time with accusations of fraud leveled at both sides.

Photograph of the White Swan Hotel in modern times.

The building that is pictured in the cdv is still standing in the small town of Rothsville, Pennsylvania at the junction of Route 772 and E. Newport Road. Until recently it was a restaurant and was known as The White Swan Hotel. We drove to Rothsville to confirm that the White Swan Hotel was the same building as is in the cdv. It is indeed! I looked for a vantage point from which to take a photograph which was as close as possible to the same position as James Heitler took the photo in 1876. I held the cdv out in front of me and took a photograph that would show the carte de visite photo and the building as it is today. We will include a print of this image along with the cdv to the winning bidder.

As a point of interest and humor, we have noted that the current correct spelling of the name of the town of Rothsville is with an "s" but on the back of the cdv it is spelled "Rothville" without an "s". We have another cdv of a different image (a very interesting image of a soldier) that is by the same photographer and the spelling of the same town on the back of that cdv is Rathsville, another mispelling of the town's name. On the one cdv the printer got the "o" but not the "s". On the other he got the "s" but not the "o"!

There is some very light soiling to the bottom margin of the mat below the image and a tiny dark stain in the left margin from an unknown substance. There is some light soiling to the back.

CDV Photo Evangelical Lutheran Teachers' Seminary, Illinois

CDV Photo Evangelical Lutheran Teachers' Seminary

Late 1860's to early 1870's carte de visite photograph of the German Evangelical Lutheran Teacher's Seminary at Addison, Illinois. Below the image in lightly penciled script is, "German Evang. Lutheran Teachers' Seminary at Addison, Illinois." From a little online research I see that the Seminary was first built in 1864 and then had later additions. I think that this image is of the Seminary after the additions. The cdv is in very good condition. The upper left corner has a slight diagonal crease that just barely touches the corner paper of the image. The lower left corner is slightly bumped. There is some very light soiling to the mat that does not affect the image. Printed on the back is, "Th. F. Roeder, Arlington Heights, Ill." The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 7/16".

CDV Photo of Italian Priest by Fratelli D'Alessandri

CDV Photo of Italian Priest by Fratelli D'Alessandri

A circa 1860's cdv photo. This image is of an Italian priest. This is a very sharp image with superb contrast.

The back has the marking of the photographer Fratelli D'Alessandri of Rome. The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 1/2". The condition is excellent. The photos in our listing clearly show the precise condition of the photo.

The following information on Fratelli D'Alessandri is from Wikipedia (translated from the Italian). Fratelli D'Alessandri was the name of the photographic studio in Rome run by the brothers, Antonio D'Alessandri (1818-1893) and Paul Francis. It was said to be the most successful Italian nineteenth century photographic studio and was significant in the history of Italian photography. Don Antonio D'Alessandri himself was a Catholic priest who requested and received a dispensation in order to practice his trade as a photographer freely. The brothers photographed Pope Pius IX and other important members of the clergy, Italian nobility, scenes in nineteenth century Rome, and images of the camps of the Papal Zouaves and the battlefield of the Mentana.

CDV Photo Philadelphia Anti-Slavery Reverend Dudley Tyng

CDV Photo Philadelphia Anti-Slavery Reverend Dudley Tyng

A nineteenth century CDV of the Reverend Dudley Atkins Tyng, rector of the Church of the Covenant, Philadelphia. He was involved in revival prayer meetings and preaching services at the YMCA in 1850's Philadelphia. The son of evangelical preacher Stephen Higginson Tyng (1800-1885), Dudley had been a rector of parishes in New York, western Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

At age 29 he was promoted to be Senior Pastor of Philadelphia's Church of the Epiphany, replacing his father who was retiring. However, he disagreed with his father's beliefs regarding slavery. Dudley's anti-slavery preaching brought complaints from church members. He resigned as pastor of that church in 1856 and together with a small number of church members organized the Church of the Covenant.

He died in 1858 after having an accident that resulted in the amputation of his arm. His funeral attracted so many people that it had to be held in the Concert Hall on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia rather than in a church.

Printed on the back is, "Published by E. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York, From Photographic Negative, From Brady's National Portrait Gallery." In pencil script on the upper back is written his name, "Dudley Tyng." The image measures 3 3/4" by 2 7/16". The cdv has in period trim of corners and top edge performed to expedite album insertion.

English CDV Photo of Preachers, Others & Book

English CDV Photo of Preachers, Others & Book

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph showing six people. Three are standing and three are sitting. Three appear to be preachers as their collars look to be preachers' collars. There is a Victorian table with a book laying on it. We do not know the identities of the subjects in the photo. The cdv measures 3 15/16" by 2 3/8". The back has a photographer's mark which is very faded. As best as I can make it out it reads, "Cooper, Photographer, London." At the bottom of the back is lightly penciled, "4991 ORK." There is soiling and some staining on the front, particularly in the area of the upper right where there is a 1/8" long vertical tear in the edge of the image that appears to have been repaired long ago. There is a smear of transparent shiny brown adhesive on the mat above the small repaired tear. The upper edge is somewhat worn.

CDV Photo Rowing Crew of Atalanta Boat Club of NY, 1872

CDV Photo Rowing Crew of Atalanta Boat Club of NY, 1872

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph showing four members of The Atalanta Club of New York who challenged the London Rowing Club in 1872 to row a four oared race upon the River Thames from Putney to Mortlake on June 10, 1872. Printed below the image is, "The Atalanta Crew, Edward Smith (Bow), AlexR, Handy, T. Van Raden, Russell Withers. M.D. (Stroke). Stereoscopic Co., Copyright."

Dr. Russell Withers was a 35 year old physician and druggist who was a leading spirit and, according to writings of that period, the father of amateur oarsmen in America. T. Van Raden was a 29 year old salesman in a Williamstreet commission house. A. Handy was a 27 year old book-keeper at the Ninth National Bank. The Atalanta Crew did not win this Anglo-American boat race which was followed closely at the time on both sides of the Atlantic and was covered in several articles in the New York Times and other newspapers of the period. In 1871 the Atalanta Crew defeated the Universities of Harvard and Yale and considered themselves the champion amateur crew of the United States. Their victory over Harvard and Harvard's good showing against Oxford in 1869 inspired the Atalanta Club to make the challenge to the London Rowing Club in early 1872.

The cdv measures 4 inches by 2 9/16 inches. On the back is printed, "Photographers to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, and to H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh. Sole Photogaphers to the International Exhibition 1862. The London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company, 54, Cheapside and 110 & 108, Regent Street."

There is some paper residue adhered to the upper back. On the front the letter "D" in the name Van Raden has been added over a letter "V" which was apparently a misprint of oarsman's Van Raden name. Otherwise the condition of this cdv is very fine.

8th Wonder Clock CDV Photo with Clock and Stephen Engle Trade Cards

8th Wonder Clock CDV Photo with Clock and Stephen Engle Trade Cards

This group includes three 8th Wonder Clock related items: a nineteenth century carte de visite photograph showing the elaborate clock known as the Engle Clock, an advertising trade card for the Engle Clock, and an advertising trade card for Stephen D. Engle, the clock's maker.

The CDV Photo of the 8th Wonder Clock

The cdv photo of the clock is described first.

Below the image of the clock on the cdv is the text: "The 8th Wonder or Engle Clock. Copyrighted June 1878 by Capt. J. Reid, Lardner, Photo., 1319 Chestnet St., Phila., Pa." Printed in the margin of the mat below the image is, "Lardner & Co. Photo's, 1319 Chestnut St. Philad's."

Printed on the back of the mat is, "J. F. Lardner & Col, Photo. Artists, No. 1319 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA. Extra copies of this picture can be had at any time by sending name and No. ...................."

The Engle clock was made by Stephen D. Engle (1837-1921) in Hazleton, PA. It took Engle over 20 years to build the clock which is the first known American-made monumental clock. His clock was called the Eighth Wonder of the World. It was exhibited throughout the Eastern United States by Captain and Mrs. Jacob Reid. After disappearing for over thirty years the clock was located and acquired in 1988 by members of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and then restored by the museum staff and volunteers. The Engle clock is on exhibit National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia, PA.

Information on the clock's special features can be read online on the website of the National Watch and Clock Museum by clicking this link.

The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 1/2". The overall contrast in this image is excellent. There is the word "Welcome" over the clock and that word is somewhat light but this is likely due to more exposure due to light on the Welcome sign. The overall condition is excellent with only a very tiny amount of light soiling to the mat and a bit of separation to the surface of the paper at the back of the mat at one corner which does not affect the front image at all. This exact cdv is from the Bernard J. Edwards advertising collection as seen in the book "Clock and Watch Advertising" by B. J. Edwards - 1978 and 2008.

The Advertising Trade Card for Stephen Engle

The description for the advertising trade card for Stephen D. Engle is as follows:

Printed on the front of the trade card is the image of Stephen D. Engle and the following: "Stephen D. Engle, Inventor and Builder of the Mammoth Pennsylvania Apostolic Musical and Astonomical Clock. (over)". On the back of the card is printed biographical information about Stephen D. Engle as well as a list of some of his earlier inventions. Those inventions include Artificial Dentures, Improvement to Dust-free Watch Cases, Dust Rings for Watch Movements, Water motor and Dental Engine Combined, Astronomical Apparatus for Schools, and an Engraving Machine. This is the very scarce black and white Engle trade card that shows a large image of him on the front. The card measures 5 1/4" by 3 1/16". The condition of the card is very good with just a tiny bit of edge and corner wear.

Advertising Trade Card for the 8th Wonder Clock

The description for the third piece, the advertising trade card for the Engle Clock, is as follows:

The trade card is printed with a colorful image of the Engle Clock on the front. On the back is a lengthy description of the features of the Engle Clock. Beneath the image on the front is printed, “Scientifically Marvelous & Artistically Beautiful. Now on Exhibition through the principal Cities of the United States. Capt. J. Reid, Manager.” The card measures 5 1/8” by 3”. It is in excellent condition with only very tiny indications of wear.

1860's CDV Photo of Leaman Lee Photo Gallery, Reading, PA

1860's CDV Photo of Leaman Lee Photo Gallery, Reading, PA

A rare & fascinating original 1860's cdv photo of the Leaman & Lee photographic Gallery in Reading, Pennsylvania. On the right side of the photo is the doorway for the photographic gallery. Over the doorway is a sign that says "Leaman & Lee Photograph Gallery". The cdv measures 4" long by 2 13/32" wide.

Enlargement of foreground of Leaman cdv

Under the sign is the wording "Douglas House". Under that sign is another sign that says "Graeff & Herb Compounders Of The Wild Cherry Gentian Bitters" There is another line of wording under this which refers to the bitters. It is hard to read this line. But, the line ends in the word "Stomach".

Behind this sign & only partially visible is a large framed photograph. To the right of the doorway in an eight paned window display showing assorted framed photographs. Under the window painted on the wood is the number "538" which is the number on Penn St., South Side in Reading, Pa. where Leaman & Lee operated their gallery.

To the left of the doorway there are three frames holding small sized photos. Each frame holds 25 photos & appears to be approximately two feet square. On the second floor of the building there are three windows. Over each window on the second floor is a sign with the wording "Leaman & Lee 538 Gallery". The center & the right window each have a man behind the window.

The third floor where the photos would have been taken has a projection on the roof to house the skylight. To the left of the doorway of the photographic gallery in the same building through another doorway there is a drug store. Assorted items are displayed in the two front windows. There is a semi-circular arch which comes out over the sidewalk.

The words "Drug Store" are on the arch. The arch connects into a rectangular wooden structure at the edge of the sidewalk. The wooden structure has the street number "540" of the drug store painted on it. Above the number 540 are the words "Arctic Soda" advertising the soda drink.

Sixteen people are on the sidewalk in front of the businesses. All are either young men or boys with the exception of either one or two women. As several people are closely grouped together it is hard to tell if there is one or two women. The back of the card has the anchor of "Hope" logo used by Leaman & Lee & the following wording: "Leaman & Lee, Photographers, 538 Penn St., South Side, Reading, Pa."

Interestingly, there was an extra piece of photographic paper applied to the mount during the making which is under the photo. Signs of this are visible at the bottom & right edges. The back has a faint insignificant line of age toning at the bottom edge. There is a trifle of insignificant wear at the corner tips. The pics clearly show the precise excellent condition of the photo.

CDV Photo Men, Perhaps Botanists, Admire Tree in Atrium

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph showing three men who are looking at a tall tree which appears to be growing inside an atrium. One man holds a watering can. He is looking up at the tree and pointing or gesturing towards the top. Behind him can be seen a ladder leaning against a wall. The tree appears to be a type of pine or evergreen. The leaves of other kinds of plants growing in the atrium at seen in the foreground and near the ladder. The vantage point of the photographer is outside a pair of large doors which have large multipaned windows as the top section of the doors.

The cdv measures 3 15/16" by 2 3/8". There is no printing on the front or the back. There is some light soiling and wear to the mat. There is a diagonal 1 1/2" long wrinkle that can be seen on the front and back of the upper left corner of the mat and also on the front of the image. The paper of the image has some tiny edge nicks and also two defects at the right corners, one of which is a chip off of the top corner and the other is a 1/4" long by 1/8" surface loss off of the bottom corner. In the center of the image is a fingerprint which looks to have occurred in the making of the image and not after it was made. So the fingerprint is likely that of the photographer or an assistant. The image has some fading. The cdv was found in Keene, NH.

American Indian CDV Photo Great Headdress, Lancaster, PA

American Indian CDV Photo Great Headdress, Lancaster, PA

Original cdv photo circa 1870's-1880's of an American Indian woman. Her feathered headdress with a donkey or burro design sits on the table next to her. She wears fancy clothing. She wears moccasins & a purse is tied with a string around her belt. It appears that all of the designs are sewn on her clothing, headdress, & moccasins.

The photo has the photographer's mark on the back of "Hubley, Photographer, 45 West King St., Lancaster, Pa." It is very unusual to find a cdv photo of an American Indian that was taken in Lancaster, Pennsylvania!

It is interesting to note that the Hubley family of Lancaster, Pa. operated one of the largest & most successful iron toy businesses in the U.S. However, we do not know whether the Photographer named Hubley had any connection with the Hubley family that was in the toy business.

The cdv measures 4 3/32" by 2 7/16". There is a minute 1/32" by 1/16" surface scuff at the bottom right corner edge of the photo. There are a few minute specks gone off of the left border of the photo in a strip which measures 1/4" long by approximately 1/50" wide. The mount has slight age soiling. CDV Photo of Girl with Popcorn Popper, Headless Doll, and Broom

CDV Photo of Girl with Popcorn Popper, Headless Doll, and Broom

Circa 1870's-1880's cdv photo measures 4 1/16" by 2 15/32". The photo shows a young girl with a popcorn popper, a broom, and two dolls. One of the china head dolls slumps over her arm. The other doll sits on her lap & lays against her chest. The second doll has had it's head broken off. The doll is of a type which has a shoulder plate so the head is broken away & detached from the shoulder plate. Sitting on the side of her lap is a broom. There are some other objects also but we can't make out what they are.

Enlargement of middle of image.

It is very unusual to see a broom in a cdv photo with a child. It is, even more so, extremely unusual to see a popcorn popper in a cdv. In over 40 years of buying & selling photos this is only the second popcorn popper that we have ever seen in a cdv photo.

This is the first cdv that we have ever seen that shows a popcorn popper being held by a kid. Additionally, this is a particularly rare & unusual combination for a kid to be holding two dolls (one without its head) as well as the popcorn popper.

It is quite rare to see a kid holding a doll with the head broken off. We cannot recall ever having owned another cdv showing a doll with the head detached. So, with all of these factors combined, this is a truly rare & interesting cdv photo!!!

The photographer's mark is at the front bottom of the mat "Chas. H. Pease, Goshen, Ind." At the bottom front border under the photographer's marking were penciled, in period, the words "Santa Claus Jr.". There was, in period, trim performed to the top border & top corners to expedite album insertion. The card has light soiling & an ink squiggle on the back. Odd CDV Photo of Child & Mother, Mother Partly Rubbed Out in Negative

CDV Photo of Child & Mother, Mother Partly Rubbed Out in Negative

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph of a mother and child. What makes it interesting is that it was printed from a negative in which the mother's image was eliminated from her shoulder upwards . There is a large dark irregular shape where her face would have been. This occurred prior to printing the image. The edges of the missing emulsion look torn away. Interesting! The image of the child remains. One of the mother's hands can be seen holding the child. The image is faded and soft in contrast. There is one spot of browning at the upper right of the dark shape. There is some very light soiling to the mat and a couple of small abrasions on the back of the mat which is blank. The cdv measures 4 3/16" by 2 1/2".

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph showing a young girl sitting on an upholstered hassock which is on casters. She holds a shoe on her lap. In the other hand she holds something else that might be her stocking. The whites in the image are somewhat blown out so the details of the dress, the white object in her hand and her foot can't be seen. So I can't tell for certain whether or not she has a stocking on her foot. The cdv measures 3 7/8" by 2 3/8". All four borders have some uneven trim. Printed on the back is, "P. Kellmer, Photographer, Broad Street, Two doors above Hazel Hall, Hazleton, Pa." There is a bit of light soiling on the bottom margin of the mat on the front below the image.

CDV Photo Pretty Girl with Baton, Conductor, or Fairy

CDV Photo Pretty Girl with Baton, Conductor, or Fairy

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph showing a pretty girl with long hair. There appear to be beads entwined in her hair. She is dressed in a knee length fancy frilly dress with a large bow on the side. There are Maltese crosses and stars on her dress. In her hand she holds a baton or a stick. The end of the stick is darker. The part of the stick an inch or two above her hand shows a slightly enlarged spindle shaped area. I don't know what that signifies. Printed on the back is, "E. I. Stearns & Co., Honesdale, Pa." In penciled script on the back is, "Hattie?" with a question mark. The number "17" is penciled in the margin on the front below the image.

The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 1/2". We are speculating that she might have been dressed to act the part of a fairy in a stage performance or perhaps she was a conductor of an instrumental group or a choir. The margins of the front mat show some very light soiling. There are two tiny 1/16" scratches at the top center of the edge of the paper of the image and two very tiny little bumps to the upper right of the end of the baton that can be seen on close inspection.

CDV Photo Child with Pipe and Broadbrimmed Hat on Table

Nineteenth century Canadian carte de visite photograph showing a cute child sitting in a chair which is set on the top of a table. The child wears a broad brimmed hat and holds a pipe to her mouth as though she were smoking it. Printed very faintly on the back is, "John Cooper, Photographer, London, Ontario." There is more to the printing on the back but it is too faded to determine what is there. There is a dust shadow on the back. There is some wear to the top and right front edges and a small bit of wear to the corners. The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 1/2". There is not a lot of detail in the white area of the child's dress. Otherwise the contrast in the image is excellent. The small light half circle shape at the lower left is in the image and not a defect that occurred later.

CDV Photo Child Holding Object, Perhaps Compass Tool

CDV Photo Child Holding Object, Perhaps Compass Tool

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph showing a child who is holding something in his hands. The object is not clear in the image. The image has some fading which does not help in trying to figure out what it is that he is holding. One end of the object looks pointed. It might be a large compass tool. The back is stamped twice with the following, "Photographed at the Old Stand Gallery by A. Shadle, Latrobe, PA. Also pictures copied and enlarged." The stamp did not take well on the first attempt so that is probably why it was stamped again. There is also a penciled number "5304" written on the back. There is a 7/8' long vertical crease from the top edge down to just above the subject's head. The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 1/2".

CDV Photo Kids with Caged Bird Automaton, Candy Container

CDV Photo Kids with Caged Bird Automaton, Candy Container

This pleasing circa 1890's-1905 or so cdv black & white silver print photograph shows three kids.

Enlarged detail of cdv of children with automaton bird in cageThe older kid of the three, which is an astonishingly beautiful girl, sits on a chair. She holds on her lap a fine quality German clockwork mechanical automaton bird in a cage toy. When wound the bird would move while chirping pleasing sounds. In front of her on the rug is a wooden toy boat. The two younger kids sit on the floor on a rug.

One kid has something laying on their lap that we cannot figure out exactly. But, it appears that it may possibly be a somewhat squashed fur covered animal of some sort. Between the two kids sits a paper mache German candy container toy rabbit. The photo which is of German origin is marked on the front & the back "Ludwig Mertens Photogr. Anstalt Rendsburg Am Gynasium." A closeup photo of the automaton is shown below.

The back design of the card is a beautiful art nouveau standing woman. Marked at the bottom right back corner of the card are the printer's initials "L. G. K. & S." Just to the right are the initials of the designer "F.S.T." These three letters connect across the top forming an insignia.

This back design seems so well done that it may well have been the work of some famous art nouveau designer. The photo is in excellent condition. The cdv measures 4 1/32" by 2 1/2". The pics show the photo clearly.

Kid Holding Lehmann Tin Toy Car CDV Photo circa 1910

Kid Holding Lehmann Tin Toy Car CDV Photo circa 1910

Original cdv photo showing a kid holding a tin toy car made in Germany by the Lehmann Toy Co. We would estimate that this photo is circa 1910 or so. This is a very fine silver bromide photograph of superb quality & exceptional contrast.

It is interesting to note that wheels are missing from the toy car. This is a bit unusual as normally when kids are shown holding toys in early photos the toys are in mint or near mint/excellent condition. So, in this case, we do not know if this kid ripped the wheels off of the toy? Or was this a hand me down from a sibling who removed the wheels?

The photographer's marking on the bottom front edge is "Kurt Schroeder Mittneida." This photo is most probably from Germany. But, we are not certain. The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 9/16". The photo is in superb fresh condition. The precise condition is shown in the pics.

4 Blatt Photographic Emporium Bernville, PA CDV Photos

Blatt Photographic Emporium Bernville, PA CDV Photos

Four nineteenth century carte de visite photographs by C. G. Blatt of Bernville, PA. Three measure 4 1/8" by 2 1/2". One measures 4" by 2 3/8". The subjects are: a girl with curly hair who wears a plaid dress, a woman in a dark dress, a landscape showing a Bernville, Pa church and graveyard, and two women wearing dresses that have been tinted a deep maroon red. On the back of the cdvs of the girl and the church landscape is printed a poem that advertises the photographer C. G. Blatt. Printed on the back of that cdv is:

"C. G. Blatt's Photographic Emporium,

Isn't this a good old treat,
Where the public fears no cheat,
They know his pictures have no beat,
In finish, excellence - and cheap.

Sour faces made so sweet,
And the style so nice and neat,
Besides they are so very cheap.
That the poor man need not squeak.

And all this you will find,
If you only come in time,
To C. G. Blatt you see,
Who will still in Bernville be.

He knows that you must laugh
Fifteen pictures for one and a half,
Duplicates fifteen for one dollar,
That's the way the people (sic.) holler.

"People" is spelled "peoble" on one of the cdvs. On the back of the cdv of the woman there is a different poem by C. G. Blatt:

Only have your shadow secured by C. G. Blatt,
Will take better portraits than any you had;
I take them myself, as no other can,
I color them, too, as no other man.

I praise each production than goes from my shed;
The ears and the nose, the mouth, and the head.
'Tis true that an eye may be lost to the view,
Or an ear left uncolored and awfully blue.

A scratch on the plate, or a hand double size,
A bright pinky color close up to the eyes;
One side of the head in shadow, no doubt,
The other is lost and quite eaten out.

By the rays of the sun and open air light,
Is a fallacy settled by those who have sight,
No matter whatever I do is well done,
Influenced by moon or influenced by sun.

My portraits are second to none, and I say it
Or rather my language being different I pray it.
Then such are my pictures, such also am I,
I live to be laughed at by all passers by."

On the back of the cdv of the women with the red tinted dresses is printed, "C. G. Blatt, Traveling Artist, Bernville, PA". A printed figure on the back carries a flag on which is the word "Excelsior." These cdv's all show overall wear, browning, and soiling.

Back of cdv of girl with violin pin.

Original cdv photo circa 1870's- 1880's showing a beautiful young girl wearing a violin pin on her neck. She rests one hand on a woven basket. The photo was taken by George Bell of 57 Argyle Street, Glasgow (Scotland).

The mat has a slight bit of wear at the edges. There is a tiny 3/16 inch by 1/16 inch flaw at the top center border. There is a faint surface wrinkle 1 3/4 inch long across the girl's hand that is mostly not visible until the card is held at an angle in the light. This does not break the surface of the paper at any point. There is slight bit of paper remaining at the top back from the original protective tissue that would have been attached to fold over & protect the front. 19th Century CDV Photo of a Dog

19th Century CDV Photo Manx Cat or Feline Looking Dog

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph of a dog, perhaps a Chihuahua or a Pomeranian. He has some resemblance to a cat but we have been told by a couple of people that he is a Chihuahua and by others that he is a Pomeranian. He appears to have close thick fur like a cat and pointed ears but from what I can see of the tail, the tail appears to be standing out straight and short more like a dog's tail. The tail is not curved over the back like the tail of Pomeranians. The tail may have been docked although we don't know if docking was a common practice in the late nineteenth century. He has a deep chest and the front legs look somewhat short relative to the back legs. He stands on a cloth covered table with a brick patterned backdrop. He moved his head a little bit during the exposure as his face is a little unsharp.

We have received several messages from people expressing their opinion of what breed this is. We received an email from a dog breeder who said: "I believe that this is a black Pomeranian that has been cut down. Probably the owner cut him/her down for the summer & they would have used shears just as they would on a sheep." Another person wrote (with considerable irritation) and said that it is "obviously" a Chihuahua. (We had even wondered if it was a Manx cat but no one seems to think that it is a cat.) If a Chihuahua, it would have been very unusual for a Chihuahua to have been in Manheim, Pennsylvania at the time that this cdv was made. That would have been a rare breed to have been in the Pennsylvania Dutch country then. In any event, we do not know what the breed is & we are offering the image as per the personal judgement of the buyer as to what breed of dog or whatever it is.

The contrast in the image is a bit soft so that his hind end blends in somewhat with the background. Printed below the image is, "Ensminger & Co., Manheim, Pa." Ensminger was a pharmacist who owned his own drugstore in Manheim and had a photo gallery in his drugstore as early as the Civil War. The back is blank.

The image is in excellent condition with the exception of the soft contrast as noted. The white mat shows some light soiling and minor edge wear. The cdv measures 3 7/8 inches by 2 7/16 inches.

CDV Photo Jordans Graveyard, William Penn Family Graves

1860's-1870's 4 1/8" by 2 15/32" size cdv photo of a very early graveyard. The back of the photo has an, in period, inked inscription "C A B" and "Jordans-Graveyard" which is about twenty miles outside of London. Eleven gravestones show in the foreground. In the background two more gravestones show as well as sunken in areas in the ground where other graves were located.

A picket fence & a tree line can be seen in the background. Some of the gravestones that we can read have the following names & dates: "William Penn 1718 and Hannah Penn 1726, Gulielma Maria Penn 1689, Mary Penington 1682, Isaac Penington 1679, Joseph Rule (1763?), Letitia Penn, Springett Penn 1696, Mary Frame, John Pennington 1710, Mary Ellwood 1708, Thomas Ellwood 1703".

This photo was originally found in an album that came out of an estate in the Berks County, PA area near Reading, PA. There is no photographer's name on the photo. There is some wear to the corners & a chip off of the bottom right corner of the mat. The precise condition is evident in the photos.

CDV Photo Engraving of Congress Park Saratoga Springs N.Y.

Carte de visite photograph circa 1860's of an attractive engraving of Congress Park in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. We have other cdvs listed which are photographs of the actual scene while this cdv is of an engraving taken of a photo.

The cdv measures 4" by 2 7/16". The scene shows a lot going on including three horsedrawn carriages, many people walking in the parklike grounds, and other structures. Printed on the back is: "A. E. Carte de visite photograph circa 1860's of Congress Park in Saratoga Springs, New York. Shown in the photo is a circular structure & there are approximately 26 people in the the photo. This photograph is from the Saratoga Springs, New York area and was probably taken by A. E. Alden of New York City. CDV Photo Saratoga Springs Circular Railway 1860's #A

CDV Photo Saratoga Springs Circular Railway 1860's #A

Carte de visite photograph circa 1860's that shows a view of railroad track and a building at the Circular Railway in Saratoga Springs, New York. On a sign on the building are the words: “Circular Rail Way.” The Circular Railway was a way for people to entertain themselves while visiting Saratoga Springs. Three people can be seen and there is some sort of cart with large wheels. We have provided an enlargement of that area of the image.

From a publication of the period, Saratoga Illustrated, the Circular Railway is described as “a small piece of track built in a circle, and provided with small cars. Here one may have the infantile joy of a ride in an enlarged baby-carriage - round and round - if you like that kind of manual labor. Some think it a trifle tiresome, . . . “

From Saratoga and How to See It, by R. F. Dearborn, 1872, regarding the Circular Railway: “An opportunity is here afforded for enthusiasts and very gallant gentlemen to test their strength and patience, by propelling themselves and friends round the circle in one of the cars. The recreation requires the expenditure of no little strength, and is only accomplished by the sweat of some one's brow, but it is preferable, doubtless, to ‘swinging round the circle.’”

The cdv measures 4 1/8" by 2 1/2". Printed on the back is: “W. H. Sipperly, Photographer, Schuylerville, and Mechanicville, Saratoga County, N.Y.” The condition is excellent with only a tiny pinprick in the mat on the right margin, very minor light soil in the margins, and a slight smudge on the back. CDV Photo Mystery Mechanical Gadget for Unknown Use

CDV Photo Mystery Mechanical Gadget for Unknown Use

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph showing a mechanical gadget. The cdv is not labeled on either the back or the front nor can I find any printing in the image itself to help solve the mystery of what the gadget is and what meant to do. It is hand tinted with a deep pink on two areas of the gadget. There is a handle on the right that must have activated the mechanism. It could be that something revolved when the handle was moved. There are dark areas in the lower part of the image that are due to a defect in the emulsion of the negative from which the cdv was printed. The dark areas are not a defect in the cdv. The back of the cdv is blank. Two bottom corner tips of the mat have in period trim to expedite album insertion. The image is very clean. There is a dust shadow that shows on the back edges of the mat. The cdv measures 4" by 2 1/2".

CDV Photo of Liverpool China Pitcher by Wildman, Illinois

CDV Photo of Liverpool China Pitcher by Wildman, Illinois

Original old & very unusual cdv photo of a Liverpool, or Prattware, or Leeds type china jug taken by A. H Wildman of Monticello, Illinois. I am not sure of the exact correct name of this particular type of jug. But, it is apparently one of the three types mentioned. This photo w/mount measures 4 1/4" long by 2 7/16" wide".

We are wondering if the man on the jug might possibly represent Admiral Nelson with a fleet of ships ? It is very unusual to find a cdv photo of a piece of English china. It is additionally even far more unusual to find a cdv photo of a piece of English china taken by an American photographer.

The photo is in fairly pleasing condition with slight soiling & a tiny circular dark spot near the top.

CDV of The World's Peace Jubilee and International Musical Festival Coliseum, Boston

CDV Photo Enormous Building Probably Train Station

Nineteenth century carte de visite photograph showing an enormous building shown under construction.

The following info about this building was found on wiki:

"The World's Peace Jubilee and International Musical Festival of 1872 took place in the Black Bay area of Boston, Massachusetts. Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore directed the festival, which lasted some 18 days. The jubilee honored the ending of the Franco-Prussian War.

For this well-publicized, high-profile, widely anticipated event, architect William G. Preston designed the "colosseum, with a seating capacity of 100,000, ...erected at a cost of half a million dollars." J.H. Wilcox & Co. designed the 43-foot high pipe organ. At opening ceremonies on June 17, 1872, before some 15,000 spectators, Philip Brooks presented a prayer and Boston mayor William Gaston and Nathaniel Prentice Banks gave speeches. "Unfortunately the size of the building and the din of the workmen caused passages of the prayer and speeches to be inaudible."

Many musicians performed at the jubilee. During the festival "the bands of the Grenadier guards, from London, of the Garde republiccaine, from Paris, of the Kaiser Franz regiment, from Berlin, and a band from Dublin, Ireland: with Johann Strauss, the waltz-king, Franz Abt, the German song-writer, and many famous soloists, vocal and instrumental, were among the foreign attractions." One concert featured a "performance of Verdi's Il Trovatore by a 2,000-member orchestra, conducted by Johann Strauss, Jr., and 100 assistants, accompanied by a 20,000-voice chorus.  The members of the chorus came "from all parts of the Union," and were directed by Carl Zerrahn  A new piece, titled Festival Hymn: Peace and Music, was composed for this Jubilee by American composer, Dudley Buck.

The Fisk University Jubilee Singers. Fisk also gave a concert, the first time African American "singers [were] included in a big musical production" in the country. Johann Strauss performed on violin: "All eyes were riveted upon the expressive face and the almost eloquent arm of Herr Strauss. Every ear was strained to catch a sound from the violin on which he ever and anon laid the bow with a passion and surety unexcelled. A storm of applause marked the conclusion of the waltz, which was at once re-demanded and heard anew. Other performers included pianist Franz Bendel; vocalist Madame Rudersdorff; the United States States Marine Band; Arabella Goddard; and Madame Peschka-Leutner.

The jubilee provided au courant "Press and Telegraph Rooms ...furnished with all desirable accommodations for the members of the press, while the telegraphic facilities are ample for communicating with all parts of the world."

Despite enthusiastic audiences, the festival suffered financially, partly from lower-than-expected attendance, and partly from setbacks during construction of the building. Some attendees responded negatively to the experience overall: "The great, usurping, tyrannizing, noisy and pretentious thing is over, and there is a general feeling of relief, as if a heavy, brooding nightmare had been lifted from us all." However, the enormousness of the 1872 international jubilee in terms of audience, publicity, and programming created a precedent which served to inspire similar festivals in later years."

The photographer was at a vantage point of some distance in order to get this entire massive building into the image. Thus some details at that distance are hard to distinguish. We believe that there are railroad tracks to the left of the building. There are at least four horse and carriages out in front of the building. The building looks to be near complete. There is a structure to the left between the tracks and the building that may still have been under construction when the photo was taken.

There is an inked inscription under the image that reads, "Truly yours, Osgood J. Fenton." In looking online for an Osgood J. Fenton, we have found one person by that name who was born in Bracketts Corner, Framingham, Mass. in about 1838. He married a Mary F. Harriman. However we have found no other information about Osgood Fenton. This cdv was found in an album of cdv's from the Washington D.C. area.

Collecting carte de visites (CDVs)

CDV showing a 19th century pull toy cow.Carte de visites or CDVs are small photographs mounted on stiff mats. They were popular from the 1860's to the end of the 19th century. They were used in a variety of ways. They were often used in family photograph albums. Some people ordered multiple quantities of them to pass out to their friends and to their customers. They were widely used as a means of advertising by actors, celebrities, circus performers who gave them out to fans.

CDVs are collected by subject matter, by photographer and by aesthetic appeal. Another factor to be taken into consideration when collecting CDVs is whether there is an original signature of the subject on the CDV. An original signature can increase the value of the CDV considerably, especially for photographs that are of celebrities and rare and/or well known military figures.
