Cabinet Photo Child Actor in A Little Outcast, 1902

Cabinet Photo of Child Actor in A Little Outcast c. 1902

Early twentieth century cabinet card photograph of a young girl who poses for the photograph with one hand curled next to her cheek as she gazes directly towards the camera. Written in ink on the lower part of the image is (as best as I can make it out): "Little Naomi Brookin as little Nell in A Little Outcast ca season 02-3-4." Naomi was apparently a child actor.

The cabinet measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. The image is a little browned. There are some very tiny fragments and a bit of soiling to the surface of the image. In the lower right margin the printing of the photographer's name has deteriorated to the point where it cannot be read although it may end with an abbreviation for Ohio: "O". On the left margin there are two circular marks that appear to be from the residue of sticker adhesive. The back is blank and has remnants of paper adhered to it. The condition can be seen in the accompanying photo. We estimate this image to be from 1902.

Pach Bros NY Imperial Cabinet Photo of Actors in Play, Yale

Pach Bros., NY Imperial Cabinet Photo of Actors in Play, Yale

A fine late nineteenth century (1880's to '90's) Imperial cabinet card photograph of actors and actresses in costume for a play. They are posed in front of a backdrop on which is painted a building and trees. Hay is strewn at their feet. Two couples gaze at each other. One of the young men has a sword and is dressed in a soldier's uniform. The seated couple are dressed in clothing that indicates that they were playing an older couple. He sports a wig with mutton chop sideburns. He wears spats, a formal jacket and vest, and has a top hat in his hand. She leans towards him. The actor standing in back of them smiles and looks straight at the photographer. He is dressed in unconventional clothing.

The cabinet card measures 10 inches by 8 inches. On the back is penciled in script the mysterious words: "Said to Yale." Or the words may be"Paid to Yale." The first letter is either an "S" or a "P" with an S-like tail. The cardboard mount is exceptionally thick and has a gold gilt edge. The contrast in the image is excellent. The condition is very fine. There is a 1/4 inch scuff on the upper left margin of the mat that does not affect the image. On the lower left margin is printed: "Pach Bros." On the lower right margin is printed: "New York." The photo's condition is shown in the accompanying picture.

Imperial Cabinet Photo: Actors in Pandora Play, St. Paul

Imperial Cabinet Photo of Actors in Pandora Play, St. Paul

A fine late nineteenth century (1880's to '90's) Imperial cabinet card photograph of nine actresses dressed in classical Greek or Roman style for a play. They are posed in front of a dark draped cloth. One young woman is opening the lid of a box. The others look on in apparent anticipation of seeing what might be in the box or what might come out of it. One of them looks on with a worried frown as it is Pandora's box that is being opened! At the top of the cabinet in the margin in ink is written: "Pandora." In the bottom margin in ink is written the names of the actresses: "Margaret, A Maloney, R. Hill, C. Hyde, Lolla-lisa (and Aug for August?) (as best as I can make that one out), Mai Hyde, G Hause, L. Bullio, M. Springer." I hope that I have spelled these names correctly but the writing leaves some of the spellings open to a bit of interpretation.

The cabinet card measures 9 15/16 inches by 6 3/4 inches. The thick cardboard mount has a gold gilt edge. The contrast in the image is excellent. The photographer has created the image with a bit of deliberate softness to the figures. The condition of the image is very fine. In the right margin, there is a photographer's mark that is partially obscured by the right edge of the image. What can be seen is the name: "St. Paul" and the beginning of the photographer's name. The first initial of his first name is "T". Then there is an M and then then it ends with an M. The letters between the two M's are underneath the right edge of the photo. The back of the cabinet is blank. The photo's condition is shown in the accompanying picture.

Wendt Cabinet Card Photo of Baby Sun, Youngest Clown on Record, 1903

Wendt Cabinet Card Photo of Baby Sun, Youngest Clown on Record, 1903

"Baby Sun, Youngest Clown On Record with SUN BROS. SHOWS season 1903". This cabinet photo was taken by "Frank Wendt, Photo Artist," The card is marked Boonton, N. J. on the same line as the Frank Wendt marking. I do not know whether Wendt had a location in Boonton N. J. or whether that was the location of the circus. Normally Wendt photos of circus performers that I have seen have a New York marking. So, this is a point that I am not clear on. The photo with mount measures 6 3/8 inches long by 4 1/8 inches wide.

Baby Sun is possibly George Sun, Jr. (1898-1986) who began performing as a clown at the age of three. His father, George Sun, established the Sun Bros. Great United Shows in 1895. The date, Sept. 30, 1903, is written in pencil on the back of the card. Beneath the date on the back is written the name Mary Louise Cookus.

Tintype & Wendt Cabinet Photos of Happy Jack Eckert

Tintype & Wendt Cabinet Photos of Happy Jack Eckert Back of Happy Jack Eckert Cabinet CardTintype photograph of Happy Jack Eckert

Two photographs of "Happy Jack Eckert" at different times in his life. He was born in 1877 and died in either 1937 or '39. (I found differing years of death for him in online articles.) One photograph is a late nineteenth century tintype of Happy Jack when he was a six year old boy and the other is cabinet photograph of Happy Jack taken by Wendt of Boonton, N. J. In the tintype his bare toes peek out beneath the bottoms of his pant legs.

The tintype measures 3 1/4 by 1 7/8". Tintypes of Happy Jack are very rare. The cabinet photo measures 6 1/2" by 4 3/16". The condition of the photos can be seen in the accompanying image. The tintype is dark and has little contrast. Paper is stuck to the back. The cabinet is a bit faded and soft. Below the image is printed: "Happy Jack Eckert, Wendt, Photos. Boonton N.J." On the back is printed information about Happy Jack with the title: "The Original Happy Jack Eckert." Among other things it states that "Happy Jack is the Largest Moose in the World. L.O.O.M., Alexandria 861." And that he "Was awarded the Gold Medal, August 10th, 1914, for being the largest man in the U. S. A., also the largest Elk, being a member of B. P. O. E., Americus, Ga., No. 752."

Cabinet Photo Musician with Trombone, Allentown PA (A)

Cabinet Photo Musician with Trombone, Allentown PA (A)

A circa 1899 to early 1900's cabinet card photo of a musician with a slide trombone. On his cap is printed "Pioneer" which stands for the Pioneer Band of Allentown, PA. He wears a uniform that is identical to the uniforms worn by other Pioneer Band members in other cabinet card photos that we have had.

The Pioneer Band was founded in Allentown, Pa in 1889 and is now in its 119th year of providing music in Pennsylvania. The band has a website at www.pioneerband.com.

The cabinet card measures 4 7/8" by 7 1/8". The image itself is in fine condition with excellent rich tones and contrast. The condition of the cabinet can be seen in the accompanying picture. The lower left corner of the card is missing a triangular piece. There is a crease in the top surface of the mat paper at that same corner. The upper right corner is missing a very tiny piece. These flaws do not affect the image itself which is quite beautiful. Printed below the image is: "629 Hamilton St., Wint, Allentown, Pa."

Cabinet Photo Musician with Trombone, Allentown PA (B)

Cabinet Photo Musician with Trombone, Allentown PA (B)

A circa 1899 to early 1900's cabinet card photo of a musician with a slide trombone. He was a member of the Pioneer Band of Allentown, PA and wears a uniform that is identical to the uniforms worn by other Pioneer Band members in four other cabinet card photos that we have. This image does not show the name Pioneer in the image but on the front of his cap is printed "Allentown Band." This is hard to read but it is more clear in some of the other images of band members that we have had. The Pioneer Band was founded in Allentown, Pa in 1889 and is now in its 119th year of providing music in Pennsylvania. The band has a website at www.pioneerband.com. The cabinet card measures 4 1/4" by 6 1/2".

The image itself is in fine condition with rich tones particularly in the area of the jacket. The contrast is a little soft in the area of his head and cap and his lower legs although this is apparently due to slight vignetting of the image by the photographer. The condition of the cabinet can be seen in the accompanying picture. Printed below the image is: "Lindenmuth Studio, 24 North 6th St.,, Allentown, Pa." The photographer's name and address are also printed on the back of the card.

Cabinet Card Photo Hook Pike's Peak Railroad (vs Mule)

Cabinet Card Photo Hook Pike's Peak Railroad (vs Mule)

Late nineteenth century boudoir sized cabinet card photograph showing a locomotive and passenger car of the Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway and also a donkey or mule loaded up with gear on its back. The mule symbolizes the earlier means of traveling up Pike's Peak which would have been a long and arduous journey by mule as experienced by Zalmon Simmons, inventor and founder of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company.

On his first trip to Pike's Peak in the late 1880's Simmons traveled there by mule, an experience which was the inspiration for his providing funding for the development of the Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway Company and the construction of the cog railway. In the cabinet photo the words "The old way" are printed in the negative under the mule and the words "And the new" are printed under the locomotive. Printed in smaller letters in the negative also just above the load on the back of the mule are "I helped to build Pike's Peak Railroad." Printed in the negative at the lower right are: "Summit Pike's Peak, 14,147 Feet" and at the lower left "Hook Photo". Imprinted in the margin to the left of the image is, "The W. E. Hook Wholesale View Co., Colorado, Springs, Colo" which refers to the photographer William Edward Hook (1833 to 1908) who photographed Native Americans, views at Yellowstone, railroads, mining, Colorado Springs, and Colorado scenery.

The cabinet card measures 8" by 5". The card is a bit curved. There is some browning to the margins of the mount and only very minor wear to the corners and edges. The back is blank.

Cabinet Card Photo possibly Railroad Train for Mining

Cabinet Card Photo possibly Railroad Train for Mining

A cabinet card photo that shows nine men and a boy standing on and in front of an odd looking railroad train engine. One of the men holds a tin lunch bucket. The cabinet card measures 6 1/2" by 4 1/4". The back of the cabinet card is blank. Two corners are creased, the mat shows some browning, and the image seems a little faded or lighter in about the upper quarter. A chain link coupler can be seen between the engine car and the next car. We believe that this type of train engine was used in mining operations and that these men are mostly miners but we are not absolutely sure.

Reading, PA Cabinet Card Photo of Train Car Accident

Reading, PA Cabinet Card Photo of Train Car AccidentBack of cabinet card photo of train accident.Late nineteenth century cabinet card photograph showing the aftermath of a horrific train wreck on the Reading railroad at Shoemakersville, Pa.

On September 19, 1890. There was a collision of a freight train and a coal train. The collision of the two trains was followed by a third collision when the Philadelphia and Reading express train with 135 to 150 passengers on board crashed into the train cars on the tracks.

Some of the cars from the passenger train went down the embankment into the Schuylkill river below. There are differing accounts of the number of people killed.

The photo shows a scene with a passenger train car and a locomotive on the tracks while lower down on the side of a hill sloping to the water is the wreckage of at least one, maybe two, train cars and some track. A crowd of people stand in front of and to the left of the passenger car.

Printed to the right of the image is, "Jos. Fritz, 418 N. 6th St., Reading, PA." There is some light wear to the edges and corners of the card and a 5/8" long diagonal crease at the upper left corner. On the back is printed, "Fritz, 418 N. 6th St., Reading, PA. Additional copies of this Cabinet can be had at any time at reduced rates." The cabinet card measures 6 1/2" by 4 1/4". The story of this 1890 train wreck is online on Gendisasters.

There is another account online of the disaster on The Republican Herald newspaper's site from their coverage of the event in 1890 (scroll down in the page to find the story).

Great Train Wreck Boudoir Cabinet Photo by Hauseknecht

Great Train Wreck Boudoir Cabinet Photo by Hauseknecht

Original boudoir cabinet photo showing a train wreck with one engine on top of another engine. This is quite a visually powerful & dramatic photo. The wreck apparently took place in the winter as there is snow on and around the train engines. The engine on the bottom has a number 470 at the front center. This is a large boudoir cabinet photo that measures 7 1/2" by 5 1/2". This photo is circa 1880's-1890's.

The back has a marking of the photographer which reads "P. B. Hauseknecht, Leading Photographer of Batavia, N. Y. 106 Main St., Opp. Opera House." We believe that the photographer's name was spelled Hauseknecht. But, we are not certain.

At the top back left corner there is a marking that seems to read as "Wreck on East Peanut is a Hausenecht original". The one word we are not certain of appears to be "Peanut" or possibly "Planut" or "Peannt" or? There are also markings & notes on the back in reference to this photo being "From the Collection of Howard A. Craig Alexander, N. Y. There is also rubber stamped marking of "H. A. Craig Alexander, N. Y."

Some portions of the notes about the photo on the back have been lost to the chipping along the edges. There is considerable chipping to the edges of the mount. Some of this chipping effects the photo at some points along the front edges & at the corners. There is some browning of the mat from age. The back of the mat shows browning & some stains. There are a couple of very slight surface wear to the photo. The condition is shown in the pics.

David Tyler Boston Train Wreck Imperial Cabinet Photo

David Tyler Boston Train Wreck Imperial Cabinet Photo

Original imperial cabinet photo showing a train wreck involving the David Tyler train engine of Boston & Providence. This is quite a visually powerful & dramatic photo. The engine appears to have collided with another train which has cars numbered 1109 & 1075. This is a large & impressive size imperial cabinet photo that measures 8 7/16" by 5 3/16". This photo is circa 1880's-1890's.

The back has a marking written on "David Tyler Boston & Providence". This appears to have been written on the back in more modern times with a ball point pen.

The front has minor brown toning from age. The back of the mat shows browning & some small brown stains that appear to have been caused by this once being in a frame backed by wood. There is a little paper loss at the top right back corner. The contrast is good in some areas & soft in other areas. The condition is shown in the pics.

A late nineteenth century (1880's to '90's) cabinet card photograph which is of an earlier photograph of a Civil War soldier. Cabinet Photo of Church, possibly in South America

Cabinet Photo of Church, possibly in South America

This professionally taken cabinet photo shows a view of what is probably a Catholic church. The streets in front of the church are of unpaved dirt. Two people are standing in the doorway. The church looks fairly large.

The circa 1880's-1890's cabinet photo appears to have been taken in South America. But, we are not able to pin down a specific country, at this time. But, we are wondering if this may possibly have been taken in Brazil? Please note that the bottom right hand corner in photo does not have a flaw this spot occurred in the negative. The condition of the photo is shown in the pics. The size is 6 1/2" long by 4 1/4" wide.

An Eisenmann cabinet card photo of the Morrill twins, Evangelists of Chicago, identified in script in the negative so that the script shows in the print. There is a biography of the twins on the back. On the front is printed, "Eisenmann, Photo Artist, New York." The card measures 4 1/4" wide by 6 1/2" tall. On the right edge of the photo where it meets the mat at about the midpoint in a 1 1/8" section there are some flaws on the front and the back where it appears that someone pierced it with a pin in three places in close proximity to each other. The flaws are more visible on the back than the front.

There is about a 1/8' by 1/8" section of the right edge of the mat in this area which is broken through and has a surface piece missing off the top layer. Otherwise the cabinet is in excellent condition.

19th Century Cabinet Photo Men Athletes & Coach, Sioux City, IA

19th Century Cabinet Photo Men Athletes & Coach, Sioux City, IA

A late nineteenth century (1880 to '90s) cabinet card photograph of five men who appear to be athletes. Four wear clothing that would be appropriate for athletic activities. I can't tell from their clothing exactly what their sport was. I would imagine that it was something along the lines of gymnastics or running. One of them has an image on the front of his top that looks like a stylized ball. The fifth man wears a jacket and a bow tie. I would assume that he is their trainer or coach.

The card measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. The back is blank. Printed below the image is: "Sioux City, Iowa. Waltermire, Riverside Park, and 201 W. Fourth St."

The condition of the photo can be seen in the accompanying image. The image has faded a bit. There is a 1/8" by 1/8" chip off the surface of the right front edge that does not affect the image. Just below that there is a smaller surface flake that is off of the mount and just nicks the right edge of the image a tiny bit.

Beginning at left center to right are what appear to be the following names: S. Huber, D. Herzig, R. Zwecker, C. Ritschel. These appear to be the names as best we can read them. But, we are not entirely certain as to what some of the names are.

Baseball Cabinet Photo 12 Kids with Flat Head Striped Baseball Bats

Amazing Iconic Pose with Spalding Bats by G. Culp, Ackley

Baseball Cabinet Photo 12 Kids with Flat Head Striped Baseball Bats

This is an original cabinet photo circa late 1870's- early 1890's. This iconic & wonderful photo shows twelve young boys holding baseball bats. In addition to a bat the boy at the center of the first row is holding what looks like a wooden stick in his other hand.

All of the twelve boys are holding what appear to be the same variety of Spalding striped bat. All of the bats have flat tops & flat bottoms. We have heard that flat top bats went out of production in the early 1890's. But, we do not know what year they went in to production & exact year that they went out of production. Undoubtedly, someone proficient at dating early bats could put a closer time frame on the photo than the span of years that we have given based on the exact version of the bat that is shown. Each bat has a wide stripe at the top. Then there is a much more narrow stripe. Then the Spalding name or a decal. One of the decals may possibly have a man's head on it. But, we are not certain. Then there is another narrow stripe.

The name "Spalding" can be made out on the bat being held by the second boy from the left on the front row. It appears that decals are showing on the bats held by the third boy from the left on the front row & the boy on the far right on the front row. Laying at the feet of the boys on the front row we can see nine baseballs. The boy on the left side of the front row & the boy on the right side of the front row moved as the photo was being taken. The other ten boys are in excellent focus. The mat has the photographer's marking on the front bottom "G. Culp, Ackley". Probably taken in Ackley, Wisconsin.

The mat measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. There are some scratches, wear, & there is slight soiling to the photo. The mat has soiling & wear around the edges. There is some chipping loss at the corners which extends into the photo at the right top & the right bottom corners.

There is a thin layer of paper over the back cardboard mat as made. The back of the paper over the cardboard mat has a 1 3/8 inch separation tear of the overlaid paper. There is also a back surface wrinkle extending another 3/8 inch out from this paper tear on the paper. At the back edge of the mat where this tear begins there is a 3/16 inch tear/scuff of the actual cardboard mat. There is some loss here & there of this thin back paper along the back edges.

At the bottom front edge of the mat there is a tiny tear that extends 1/8 inch into the photo. Along the bottom edge of the mat there is a thin scratch that extends 3/16 inch into the bottom edge of the photo. The exact condition is clearly shown in the pics.

CDV Photo & Cabinet Card: Baseball Statue, Woman, Family

CDV Photo & Cabinet Card: Baseball Statue, Woman, Family

A carte de visite and a cabinet card photo that both show a woman and a statue of a baseball player. The cabinet card shows the woman standing next to a pedestal on which is the statue of a baseball player. The cabinet card measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. The back of the cabinet card is blank. Printed beneath the image is the photographer's mark, "O. D. Edwards, Boonville, Mo." The cabinet card photograph is very clean and in excellent condition with good contrast.

The carte de visite shows six family members including the same woman in the same clothing, the same statue of a baseball player, and the same pedestal. The statue is on the floor in the cdv image. The young boy in the cdv photo has struck a particularly odd pose for the photographer. The boy is partly reclined on the photographer's pedestal. I have to wonder if he is trying to give the impression of preparing to throw an underhanded pitch? Printed on the cdv back is, "From O. D. Edwards, Photographer, 86 Main St., Boonville, MO. Old pictures copied and enlarged to any required size in India ink, Crayon, or Watercolors. Negatives preserved." The cdv measures 3 15/16" long by 2 1.2" wide". There is slight trim (approximately 1/16") to the bottom of the mat. The cdv image has a little bit of fading or is a lighter print than the cabinet. I wish I knew the background story behind these two images.

Imperial Cabinet Photo Baseball Players, Peekskill Military Academy '97

Imperial Cabinet Photo Baseball Players, Peekskill Military Academy '97

Enlarged detail of image.

Back of cabinet card photo of PMA baseball team.

This is an Imperial cabinet photo of boys who were attendees of the Peekskill Military Academy and were on the baseball team there. On the front of the shirts of the players’ uniforms are printed “PMA” on one and “P3” on eight. Helping to date the photo is the number “97” shown on the glove that is resting on the lap of the boy with “PMA” on his shirt. Which likely dates the photo to 1897. The “97” appears to have been added by the photographer to the negative of the image.

The boy to the right of the boy with “PMA” is holding a catcher’s mask. The boy on the far left is holding a glove that appears to be a crescent design fielder’s glove. Three of the boys, including the one with the “97” on the glove, appear to be holding catchers’ gloves. One boy holds a baseball. Three baseball bats are in the foreground.

Printed below the image is, “Pach Bros., 935 Broadway, New York.” There is a tack hole near the midpoint of the upper edge of the photo and the lower left and upper right corners show wear. The image shows good contrast and tones and is in excellent condition. This imperial cabinet is quite thick & of very high quality which is typical for Pach Bros. cabinet photos.

The cabinet photo measures a large & impressive 10 inches wide by 7 15/16 inches tall. The image is not narrower at the bottom than the top. The parallex is due to my not having my camera exactly parallel to the cabinet when I took a picture of it.

London Bassano Cabinet Photo Violet Duchess of Montrose

London Bassano Cabinet Photo Violet Duchess of Montrose

Late nineteenth century cabinet card photograph of the Duchess of Montrose. Written in script below the image is: "Duchess of Montrose." On the back is stamped in small letters, "Alexander Bassano, 72 Piccadilly, London W."

From Who's Who in Glasgow 1909:

"VIOLET, Duchess of Montrose, is a daughter of Sir Frederick Graham. Bart., of Netherby, in the old Debatable Land, and was married to the Duke of Montrose in 1876. Her Grace counts among her ancestors the witty Richard Brinsley Sheridan and his wife, the beautiful Miss Linley, and it was therefore not without reason of more than one kind that she was one of the four duchesses chosen to carry the canopy over Queen Alexandra at her coronation. The Duchess devotes a large part of her time to the charitable enterprises of the West of Scotland, and, with a gift of ready and graceful speech, she is in constant request to countenance and commend works of philanthropy and benevolence. Besides a nursing home of her own in Govan, she manages Mrs. Elder's Cottage Hospital there, and assists in the management of the late Lady Campbell of Garscube's Hospital for Permanently Invalided Soldiers at Maryhill. And during the Boer War she was engaged busily in organising and administering the invaluable help of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Association. Her Grace also built and carries on the Montrose Home at Balmaha, where all summer long by thirty at a time poor city children are entertained for a fortnight each in the sunny mountain air by Loch Lomondside."

From the website of Southern Steam Trains:

"Express passenger steam locomotives of the Princess Coronation Class, or as more commonly known Duchess class, were considered to be Sir William Stanier’s ‘Magnum Opus’ for the former London Midland and Scottish Railway. Built in both Streamlined and un-streamlined versions they were designed to compete with Gresley’s Class A3’s and A4’s on the LNER’s East Coast route for the lucrative business between London and Scotland. A total of 38 members of the class were constructed and named after Royal personages, ladies of the British aristocracy and Cities in the United Kingdom. One such locomotive was named after the Duchess of Montrose."

The cabinet measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. It is in excellent condition. There is some light soiling on the back which is blank other than the photographer Bassano's stamped mark. The condition can be seen in the accompanying photograph.

Cabinet photo from the 1890's of a young "Postal" employee & his wife. The man is wearing a sweater which has the word "Postal" on it. Also, he is wearing a hat which has a large metal crest on the top. We are not able to read the wording on the crest. The mat has the photographer's identification finely pressed in which reads "Preble 68 Main Street, Waterville, Me."

At the right border of the mat there is a 1/4 inch & a 1/8 inch tear. Cabinet & Miniature Photo of Farmers or Herbalists with Plants

Cabinet & Miniature Photo of Farmers or Herbalists with Plants

A late nineteenth century (1880s to '90s) cabinet photograph and a miniature photo of the same image. The image is of two men sitting at a table. They both hold cuttings of plants. One holds his plant cutting up as though showing it off. The plant is apparently the reason for the photograph being taken. This sort of photograph that tells a story which has been lost to time always leaves open for speculation the details of the story. Why would someone want to have their picture taken with plants? The answer logically could be that they had a connection to the plants. They probably grew the plants from seed. They could be farmers who are proud of their product. They could be herbalists. Perhaps they were business partners and grew grain or something else of which they were proud.

The cabinet photo measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. Its condition can be seen in the accompanying photo. There are no maker's names printed on the cabinet which has a blank back. The image in the cabinet photo is a little faded. There is a bit of wear to three of the four corners and there is damage to the emulsion in the lower right front corner that measures about 1/2 inch by 1 1/4 inches.

The miniature photo measures 1 5/8 inches by 2 3/8 inches. On the back of the miniature is printed: "Miniature Photos. Send your Cabinet and get 12 Miniatures for 25 cent Postal Money Order. Wrap Picture with heavy wrapper and enclose 1 cent stamp for return postage. NO TINTYPES COPIED. W. T. Temple & Co. Trenton, N.J., U.S.A. P.O. Box 495."

The condition of the miniature can be seen in the accompanying image. There is a 5/16 inch long scratch in the emulsion that can be seen as a white mark in our online photo. The scratch goes from one shoulder of the man on the left to just below his elbow. There is also a tiny surface pinprick in the shadowed area below the table. Otherwise the condition of the image in the miniature is excellent with great contrast and sharpness. It was obviously copied from the larger cabinet when the cabinet still had its original contrast and sharpness.

The back is marked "F. E. Musser's Photographic Studio 16 North 3rd. St. Harrisburg, Pa."

The mat measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 3/16 inches. The back has a 1 inch mat crack from a slight bend at the edge. The corresponding area on the front just has a very subtle & insignificant surface wrinkle. This does not break the surface at any point on the front. So, this minor flaw on the front is of little consequence.

There are a few minute insignificant signs of wear around the edges. Otherwise, the photo is in excellent focus & condition. Please note: The actual photo shows more details than are shown in the scan in our listing. Also, the actual photo is quite rich but it is not as dark as shown in the scan. This very rare cabinet is a photo which could easily be one of the top stars in most advanced cabinet photo collections.

Cabinet Photo Samuel H. Miller Tinsmith Shop 1888, possibly Pittsburgh

Samuel H. Miller Tinsmith Shop Cabinet Photo 1888, possibly Pittsburgh

Original cabinet photo showing the tinsmith shop of Samuel H. Miller. The photo apparently shows Samuel Miller on the right of the doorway & a young man (perhaps his grandson?) on the left of the doorway. There is a three part painted wooden sign hanging on the building advertising the establishment. The sign says "Samuel. H. Miller" on the top section. The middle section has a painting of a tin teapot. The bottom section of the sign has the wording "Tin Plate & Sheet Iron Worker". This sign is in excellent condition & is very easy to read in the photo.

Below this three section wood sign hanging on the building is a small painted wood sign with the word "Lime". Below the Lime sign is a well worn painted tin sign that appears to have been on the building for a long time. The wording on the tin sign is fairly hard to read. but appears to be "..looks Stoves, Stove Grates, Fine Stoves". The letter or letters before the "look" or "looks" is not readable.

Over the doorway is the # 407. According to an early inked note on the back above the photographer's name this location was at "407 Forrest St around 1888". We think that the photo may have been taken in Pittsburgh, Pa. But, we are not certain.

Shown in the front display window are numerous pieces of the tinsmith's work. Included are lamps, ladles, bowls, vases, jars, bottles, plate, dustpan, etc. The back has the photographer's marking "Hock & Houston, View Photographers New York". Below this marking is the marking "A. R. Merriman, Manager. No. 531 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, Pa."

This cabinet photo measures 6 1/2 inches long by 4 3/16 inches wide. The mount & photo have some age soiling & some small stains. The mount shows wear at the edges & the corners. There is a 3/16 inch by 7/16 inch scuff off of the right top back corner tip. The condition is shown in the pics.

Lamps, Pots, Pans, General Store Occupational Cabinet Photo

Lamps, Pots, Pans, General Store Occupational Cabinet Photo

Original occupational cabinet photo showing a woman standing outside of her store. In the windows on the left side there are lots of lamps & candlesticks. In the doorway there are large wooden buckets, large baskets, & three different kinds of brooms.

Metal buckets overhead. Hanging on the entry door there is a muffin tin. In the windows on the right side there are funnels, sifters, drainers, bowls, ladles, & all sorts of other items. The woman has a pleasing smile. This cabinet measures 6 9/16 inches by 4 5/16 inches. The photo is circa 1880's-1890's.

The corners have some bumps & wear & the edges have some wear. The mat, as well as the photo, is lightly browned from age. There are some stains at the right front bottom of the mat. There are some small chips off of the surface of the mat at the left front bottom.

The back has the photographer's marking of "S. Markville, Architectural, Mechanical and Landscape Photographer 343 East 34th Street, New York." The back has a penciled marking at the top left corner "165 Ridge" which was probably the street address of the establishment in the photo. We do not know where this photo was taken. The condition is shown in the pics.

Cabinet Photo of Wine and/or Beer Merchant with Bottles & a Gun

Wine and/or Beer Merchant with Bottles & a Gun Cabinet Photo

Original cabinet photo showing a handsome young wine &/or beer merchant with bottles of wine &/or beer. There are two different types of bottles sitting on the table. We are not certain whether one bottle is a wine bottle & one bottle is a beer bottle? Or they could be two different types of bottles for the same produce? We do not know.

There is a glass sitting on the table which is partially full. The glass is dark on the bottom area giving the feeling that there is either wine or a very dark beer in the glass. Sitting on the floor is a basket which has wine or beer bottles in it.

Very interestingly, there is a revolver type pistol leaning up against one of the bottles. So, it appears that this Latvian spirits merchant was definitely not to be messed with! This cabinet photo measures 6 7/16 iches by 4 1/4 inches. This photo is circa 1880's-1890's.

The photographer's marking of "Ed. Kalcenau Rujen" is on both the front bottom border & the back of the card. We are fairly sure that this photographer worked in Latvia. However, there is a slight chance that he worked in Bulgaria. There is a bump & a tiny wrinkle at the bottom right corner tip. The top left corner has a couple of small surface scuffs. The mount shows some age toning. The back of the mat has a strip of old tissue paper residue at the top. This could probably be carefully removed with a little effort. But, we will leave that option to the buyer. The photo has rich & pleasing contrasts. The condition is shown in the pics.

The cabinet measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. The cabinet has some flaws. It can bend in the middle when handled as the mount was broken at the center on the back. The photo on the front has considerable creasing and is broken at some points along the crease. There are dark stains on the back from tape that had been on the back for some time. A piece is missing from one corner. There is some light soiling to the mount and light fading. The condition can be seen in the accompanying photographs.

Printed on the back is, “The National Photographic View Co., No. 359 East 34th Street, New York., Duplicates can be obtained within fifteen days by ordering from the above number of negative.” In pencil on the upper back is written, “4, 2235-2” which is likely the negative number and “1880” which is likely the year.

Lancaster PA Cabinet Photo Women Chorale Group

Lancaster PA Cabinet Photo Women Chorale Group

Late nineteenth century cabinet card photograph of seven women, possibly a chorale group. One holds a long pointer and has a stern expression on her face. She is apparently meant to be the instructor or conductor. Several of the other seated women hold books or paper. Song books perhaps? A smiling woman peeks through the long drapes in the background. One of the seated women points a finger at her as though chastising her but the woman is smiling as if it were all a joke. One woman holds her hand up to the side of her face as though she is telling a secret. A furry skin of an animal is in the foreground on the floor as a rug. Printed below the image is the photographer's information: "Rote, 50 1/2 North Queen St., Lancaster, PA."

1890s Cabinet Photo Men at Table, Printed Toy Cat by Feet

A late nineteenth century (1890s) cabinet card photograph of two men wearing fez type of hats. The man on the left has a pencil sticking out from the edge of his hat. A bottle is on the table. An empty glass sits on the table in front of the man who has the pencil in his hat. The other man holds a partially filled glass. On the floor next to his feet is a nineteenth century printed cloth stuffed toy cat of the type that was made by the Arnold Print Works in North Adams, Massachusetts. An enlargement of the part of the image with the stuffed toy cat is provided to the right of the cabinet card image above.

Cabinet Photo Man with Gloves Holds Fighting Roosters

Cabinet Photo Man with Gloves Holds Fighting Roosters

Circa 1880's-1890's cabinet photo of a man holding two fighting roosters. Sticking partly out of his pockets are heavy protective gloves. But, he holds the roosters barehanded. Quite a rare subject for a cabinet photo. There is no photographer's identification on the matt. The photo was found in York, Pa. But, we do not know where the photo was taken.

The mat measures 6 inches by 4 1/16 inches. There is trim to the mat on all four sides which slightly touches the background of the photo at some points. There are a couple of flaws at the top & bottom borders of the matt. There is a pinspeck scuff just in from the left border. There is a thin dark line 1 inch up from the left bottom border. The condition of this cabinet photo can be clearly seen in the accompanying image.

The cabinet measures 6 9/16 inches by 4 1/4 inches. The corners are a little bumped and there are a couple of tiny impressions in the surface. Otherwise the condition is fine with excellent contrast. Boudoir Sized Cabinet Photo 14 Men Celebrating c. 1896

Boudoir Sized Cabinet Photo 14 Men Celebrating c. 1896 Back of cabinet card photo.

Circa 1896 boudoir sized cabinet photo showing fourteen men. They are seated and standing in the room with pictures hung on the walls. It may be a residence. All of the men wear suits and ties. They are posing to have their picture taken to commemorate some event. There is no clue that I can see in the photo to let us know what the event is. The image turned up in Berks County near Reading, PA. On the back is an inked and penciled inscription that I can read some of but not all. I can't make out the last name of the man who wrote the inscription. Otherwise the inscription reads, "With Compliments of Johnny (illegible name), April 22, 1896. 74th Anniversary." The "74th anniversary" is written in pencil. So they are celebrating the 74th anniversary of something. Which would be something from the year 1822. The cabinet measures 8 7/16 inches by 5 3/16 inches. The edges have minor wear at the corners. The margins outside of the image area show some toning from age and a tiny bit of staining.

Cabinet Photo Woman with Many Objects on Dress as Store Advertisement

Cabinet Photo Woman with Many Objects on Dress as Store Advertisement

This fascinating circa 1880's-1890's albumen sepia toned cabinet photo shows a woman wearing & holding various objects from a store as an advertisement. She holds a wooden hoop for a barrel over her head. On the hoop there is a wide seven pronged wooden comb & a wooden scoop tied to the hoop with ribbons. There is also another object that we are uncertain of which is tied to the hoop with a ribbon. This third item may possibly be a flat head metal spreading tool of some sort? But, we are not certain.

On the back of her hair she wears a pair of crossed tin spoons. On her shoulders she wears two dinner bells. Hanging down from her neck onto her back are various ribbons & twines. Suspended from her belt on what looks like a wrench of some sort there is a small pistol.

From the side angle that she is standing you can tell that there is a row of metal objects sticking well out from the front of her dress. We are not certain what these objects are. At her feet there are two rocks & there is a seven pronged metal head rake with a wooden handle. The handle of the rake has a rectangular bent paper tag on it which was probably the price tag from the store.

This cabinet photo is 6 7/8 inches long by 3 7/16 inches wide. There are some tiny insignificant losses at the top left edge & the top edge of the photo. There are a few tiny flaws at the bottom right corner tip of the photo. There is a 3/16 inch by 1/32 inch scuff on the bottom edge of the mat. There is 1/16 inch tear that shows only on the back of the mat at the edge of this tiny scuff.

The photo is in quite pleasing & attractive condition. The scan in our listing clearly shows the precise condition of this cabinet card. This interesting photo was discovered in Virginia. But, we do not know where the photo was taken as there is no photographer's marking present on either the front or the back.

Cabinet Photo of 15 Lodge Men Dressed as Indians, Horses in Background

Cabinet Photo of 15 Lodge Men Dressed as Indians, Horses in Background

Original cabinet photo showing a large group of men dressed as Indians. There are at least 15 men dressed as Indians. The men are standing on a dirt street in front of a couple of buildings. They are NOT Indians. They are members of the Redman's Lodge which are dressed up as Indians.

There are a couple of men wearing sashes who are probably also members of the lodge. In the background there are numerous spectators for the occasion as well as several horses. This photo was found in an estate in Berks County, Pa. It is likely that the photo was taken in a small town in either Berks County, Pa. or in Lancaster County, Pa. as the Redman's Lodge had a large following & many members in these areas.

This cabinet photo measures 6 1/8 inches by 4 5/16 inches. This photo is circa 1890's-1905 or so. There is irregular trim to the edges of the mat. The mat shows some age soiling & toning. The tones of the photo vary from soft to medium. The condition is shown in the pics.

Cabinet Photo Hunter & Camp with Rifles & Animal Pelts

Cabinet Photo Hunter & Camp with Rifles & Animal Pelts

An interesting cabinet photo that shows a hunter who is carrying a rifle on his shoulder. Hanging from his belt are the pelts or bodies of at least four animals. I can see a long tail on one that leads me to believe that several are squirrels. The largest one has a striped tail and might be a raccoon. He has another one hanging from his hand but the contrast there is so soft due to movement or fading that it is indistinct. Leaning against a tree is another rifle. Behind him can be seen a tent. To the right can be seen part of a large spoked wheel. The contrast in this photo is soft and much of the detail in the light areas is lost. Otherwise the condition of the cabinet is very good. The size of this cabinet card is 6 5/16 inches by 5 3/8 inches. We estimate that this image is from about 1900 to 1910.

On the back is printed a landscape in green with shorebirds and the following: "Established 1868. S. Hormusjee Photographer, Kalbadevi Road, Bombay." A circa 1890's to early twentieth century cabinet card photo of a boy who holds a bisque head doll that is of the type that claps cymbals together with its hands. The cabinet card measures 4 1/4 inches by 6 3/8 inches.

There is some light soiling of the mat that does not affect the image and some tiny chipping to the edges of the paper on which the image is printed, particularly at the top and bottom edges. There is a small chip off of the left lower corner of the image. The condition of the cabinet can be seen in the accompanying picture. The corners show some light wear and one corner, the upper left, is a bit bumped. Printed below the image is the following (which is probably not correct but is the best that I can make out): "Caginem, Pokmkaim." 1896 Cabinet Photo Girls with Fairy or Angel Costumes

1896 Cabinet Photo Girls with Fairy or Angel Costumes

Cabinet photograph that shows ten girls who wear white dresses with applied stars, star headdresses, and paper wings. One of them might be a boy rather than a girl. Five of them are much younger than the other five. Some hold sprigs of something. The center girl in the front holds a long white pole. The cabinet measures 5 1/4" by 4 1/4". In ink on the bottom of the back is written, "Nov. 19, 1896." Above that, the following names are written in pencil: "Ini Franklin, Nellie McCarthy, Annie McCarthy, Annie Conlin, Ruby Franklin, Ruth Buchannan, Gurtrude McCarthy, Hannah Franklin, Lizzie McCarthy, Mary Peters." I have typed them as they are spelled. The contrast is a bit soft so some detail in the white areas is lost. I would have thought that this photo was somewhat later than 1896 but the date on the back looks to have been written in period.

Japanese Toy Shop Albumen Photo with Hundreds of Dolls c. 1910

Original albumen sepia tone photo showing an early Japanese "Toy Shop". The photo is labeled "Toy Shop" at the bottom right corner in the negative. The photo shows three women sitting in a shop which has all sorts of toys & assorted items for sale. It is a small shop. But, there are many hundreds of items including piles of toys & dolls.

There are way too many items in all categories to even think about counting them. These women were really maxing out big time on their display space! We would date this photo circa 1890's-1910 or so.

Cabinet Card Photo c. 1900 Large Group Men & Women

Cabinet Card Photo c. 1900 Large Group Men & Women

Late nineteenth or turn of the century boudoir sized cabinet card photograph showing a large group of people assembled on the grass in front of a building that looks as though it might be a college building. There is nothing that identifies what the building is or where this image was taken. There are men and women in the photo. They are dressed in a style that seems to be from within a few years of 1900. On close examination of the image to see if there are any identifying clues to its origins I can see that two of the men seated near the front each hold an object that is round in shape but I can't determine what either item is. They don't look to be the same item. Six of the men and women in the front right row hold onto what looks like a long strip of white cloth or a rope. The people in the group range in age from about college age to perhaps in the early sixties. Most may be college age. The cabinet card measures 8" by 5". The back is blank. The mat shows some browning and one mat corner is chipped.

S. American or Caribbean Cabinet Photo: Cookie Vendor with Wagon, people hold cookies

Cabinet Photo Street Vendor with Wagon, possibly Brazil

Cookie vendor's wagon & people holding cookies. This professionally taken cabinet photo shows a young boy street vendor leaning on a wagon while at the other end a young boy holds the wagon up. In the background a man holds a hammer in one hand & a partially eaten cookie in the other hand. Next to the man with the hammer ? & a cookie stands a young girl holds a cookie on top of a bottle of some kind of beverage. next to her stands a young black girl holding a clump of something in one hand.

Two of the people in the scene are black, two of the people have medium dark skin, & one is white. The side of the wagon has several words lettered on it which we cannot fully read as some of the lettering is blocked by the wheel. But, this is part of the lettering that can be made out: "F'AMB.........GALETAS". Additional letters are also visible. We have been told by someone that knows Spanish that the word "galeta"  means cookie. So, this makes perfect sense that we see some of the people in the photo holding cookies.

K. Miyashita, Japan, Cabinet Photo of Treatment of Head Wounds after the Great Nobi Earthquake, 1891

K. Miyashita, Japan, Cabinet Photo of Treatment of Head Wounds after the Great Nobi Earthquake, 1891

Japanese cabinet card photo of surgical procedure being performed on the heads of two men. On the front on the lower left of the image are several Japanese characters which would have been in or on the negative from which the image was made. The characters on the lower left front translate as follows: "Niwagun Koorimura Sekijuujishakaribyouin". The meaning of this in English is: "Niwa County, Koori Village, Temporary Red Cross". Niwa County was in Aichi Prefecture which was where Miyashita's photographic studio was located. On the back is the Japanese photographer's information: "Photographer K. MIYASHITA, Honmachi. Sanchiome, NAGOYA, AICHI" Below the words in English are Japanese characters which I cannot read. The card measures 4 1/4" tall by 6 1/2" wide.

Additional information about the photo has come to us from someone in Japan. There was an example of this same photograph on the website of the Tokyo Metropolitan Photography Museum, from an exhibit that they had in 2007. The image is no longer there.

They mention the photo is from 1891, and they say that the photographer was Nakamura Bokuyou. The title of the photograph on the website is "The circumstances of the treatment of seriously injured patients from the earthquake, in the temporary Red Cross Hospital, Niwa County, Koori Village."

This photograph is apparently in the collection of the Japanese Red Cross Nursing University. It is interesting that they mention the photographer as being Nakamura Bokuyou as our photograph is marked with the back imprint of the photographer K. Miyashita.

The photograph is of two surgical procedures that are being performed simultaneously on the heads of two men. This is quite a graphic image and is somewhat disturbing to look at. I don't know what the name of the procedure is. Two men in suits stand in the background and observe. Two people hold bowls to catch the blood. A woman holds something to wipe the blood for one patient. A woman on the left holds a contraption that I can't identify.

After doing research on Nagoya, Japan, and major disasters in history, we have concluded that this disaster image by Miyoshita is from the aftermath of the Great Nobi Earthquake (also known as the Mino-Owan Earthquake) that occurred on October 28, 1891. More than 30,000 homes were partially destroyed in Nagoya and the surrounding countryside and more than 80,000 were entirely demolished. There was a fire that occurred that was so severe and fast that hundreds of people were burned to death. The death toll from the quake was said to be 7,300. It is possible that the patients in this image may have been injured during the Nobi earthquake and that this cabinet shows them being treated for their injuries.

We don't find early Japanese photography such as this in our area often and even less often do we find subject matter that is this unusual!

The condition of the photo can be seen in the pics.
